AP World History: Modern rewards practice more than almost any other AP humanities exam. Two sections (the DBQ and the LEQ) are essays with tight rubric structures, and the SAQs are their own format most students haven't seen. Working through timed practice with real feedback is how you internalize the rubric conventions that separate a 3 from a 5.

College Board released exams
The AP Central website hosts the free-response questions from the most recent few administrations (currently 2023 to 2026), each with the official scoring rubric, sample student responses at multiple score levels, and reader commentary. Older sets are no longer posted publicly, though teachers can access more through AP Classroom. It's the most valuable practice resource because it's the exact scoring your exam will be marked against.
Use it as the primary source for essay practice. With four years posted you have roughly four DBQs and a dozen LEQ prompts to work from, which is enough for a DBQ or LEQ every fortnight from January. Note that the SAQ and LEQ sets from 2026 and earlier use the retired format (a choice of SAQ and LEQ prompts); the prompts are still good practice, but on your exam all three SAQs and the single LEQ are required. Self-score each one against the rubric and pay attention to sample responses at the score you're earning versus one score higher.
Limitation: released full MCQ sections are rarer than released essays. Supplement MCQ practice from a prep book or Fiveable.
Cost: free.
Prep books
Princeton Review, Barron's, and 5 Steps to a 5 each include two or three full-length practice exams with MCQ and essay sections. The MCQs are the closest thing to authentic MCQ practice you'll find at volume, and the answer explanations tend to be thorough.
Use them for full timed mock exams, especially the last four to six weeks before the exam. Two full mocks under strict timing are the best way to find out whether your pacing holds up across all four sections.
Limitation: the essay rubrics in prep books are simplifications of the official ones. Sample essays are often shorter and less nuanced than real AP samples. For essay practice, prefer released materials and only use prep book essays for full-timing simulation.
Cost: roughly 30 for a current 2027 edition. One book is enough, but make sure it's a 2027 edition — earlier printings describe the retired SAQ and LEQ choice format.
Heimler's History
Heimler's History is a YouTube channel with content review videos organized by unit and detailed walkthroughs of DBQ and LEQ scoring. His DBQ videos are particularly useful for seeing sourcing and complexity moves modeled in real time.
Use it for content review when your class has moved past a topic you didn't fully grasp. Not a replacement for structured content but a strong companion.
Limitation: no practice tests. Pair with released FRQs and a prep book.
Cost: free (some content behind a paid tier).

Get started for free!Fiveable
Fiveable is a student-facing AP resource with study guides, live prep sessions closer to the exam, and community-generated practice content. The DBQ and LEQ writing sessions can be particularly useful because they walk through the scoring in real time on unseen prompts.
Use it as a community layer alongside official materials. The live sessions closer to the exam are the highest-value part.
Limitation: content quality varies since much of it is community-generated. Cross-reference against the official rubric before trusting a scoring judgment.
Cost: free tier available, paid subscription for full access.
Cognito AP World History
Cognito's AP World History course covers all nine units matched to the CED with structured content, practice DBQs, LEQs, and SAQs, and rubric commentary at each score level. Every practice essay comes with what would score row A, row B, row C, and row D, and why.
Use it as the primary structured resource, paired with released FRQs for authentic timed practice.
Limitation: self-paced course rather than timed mock exams. For strict timing simulation, add a prep book in the final month.
Cost: subscription.
How to sequence your practice
October to February: work through structured content (Cognito or textbook) alongside one released DBQ or LEQ per fortnight, self-scored against the rubric. March: shift to weekly essay practice and add MCQ practice from a prep book. April: do two full timed mock exams from a prep book. The week before the exam, review your own scored essays to remind yourself of the specific patterns in your own mistakes rather than adding new material.
