AP Calc AB score chart: What raw score gets you a 5

The AP Calculus AB score chart is the conversion CollegeBoard uses to turn your raw exam performance (42 multiple-choice questions plus 6 free-response questions) into the 1-5 composite that appears in your July results. The MCQ and FRQ sections are each weighted at 50% of the composite, a scaled score is computed, and CollegeBoard sets the cutoffs after the exam based on difficulty and cohort performance.

One thing to flag up front: CollegeBoard doesn't publish the exact raw-to-composite table for AP Calc AB. The numbers below are reconstructed from released practice exams and prep-provider analysis, and they typically move a few points in either direction each year.

AP Calc AB's cutoffs move for a few reasons. The MCQ section splits into a no-calculator part (29 questions) and a calculator-active part (13 questions), and the mix of algebraic manipulation vs conceptual questions varies year to year. FRQ difficulty depends on which topics land: A year with a heavy differential-equations context problem alongside a related-rates FRQ can feel harder than one focused on definite integrals and function analysis.

Cohort strength matters too. AP Calc AB is the largest AP math exam, taken by about 292,000 students in May 2026, and CollegeBoard calibrates the cutoff so the meaning of a 5 stays stable across years. The 5-rate was 20 percent in both 2025 and 2026, with 65 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher in 2026.

AP Calc AB runs more forgiving than most STEM APs on the raw-score cutoff, but the FRQs are where most students lose the 5. Partial credit is meaningful on FRQs when you show clear work: a wrong final answer with correct setup, correct derivative and clear notation still earns the setup and process points on that part. Students who write only the final answer routinely lose points they'd have kept with a labeled diagram or a written justification.

Units 4, 5, 6 and 7 (contextual applications of differentiation, analytical applications, integration and accumulation, and differential equations) between them make up roughly 50-60% of the exam. Weak performance on any one of those tends to move your composite by several raw points.

For a comfortable 5, aim to answer roughly 33-37 of the 42 MCQs correctly and pick up 6+ of 9 points on most FRQs. That combination clears the top band even in a stricter year. The no-calculator MCQs are typically where most missed points come from, so practice arithmetic and algebraic manipulation fluency alongside the calculus itself.

For a 4, roughly 26-32 MCQs plus 4-5 of 9 points on most FRQs tends to be enough. For a 3, roughly 21-26 MCQs with basic FRQ engagement usually gets you there. The past papers are the most efficient way to build the setup fluency the FRQs reward, since the format has been stable for years and the rubric expectations are visible in the released scoring guidelines.

One last note on targeting: If a target school gives credit for a 4 or a 5 equally, aiming for a comfortable 4 and using the saved study time on other STEM subjects (physics, chemistry, another math) can be the better call. Check each target college's AP credit policy before setting a score target.
