AP Calculus AB is one of the AP exams where practice tests do the heaviest lifting. The FRQ section rewards a specific setup style (integrals written out with limits, units on final answers, condition checks on named theorems) that most classroom courses don't drill enough. Working through released FRQs with the official scoring guides is often what lifts a score, because the calculus itself is usually not the issue; the format is.
| Source | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|

| Prep books (Princeton Review, Barron's, 5 Steps) | $25 to $30 | Full timed mock exams and MCQ practice. |
| Khan Academy AP Calculus AB | Free | MCQ practice by topic; useful for skill drilling. |
| Cognito AP Calculus AB past papers | Free with limits | Full past-paper library with worked solutions. |
College Board released FRQs
AP Central publishes the six released FRQs for roughly the three most recent exams, along with the official scoring guides showing exactly which setup steps and final answers earn each point. It's the most important free resource for AP Calc AB preparation.
Use it as the primary source for FRQ practice. Aim to work every released FRQ AP Central posts (about 18 questions across three years), covering the recurring question types more than once, and top up with older papers your teacher can supply. Self-score each one immediately against the scoring guide and pay attention to where you're losing points that aren't about the calculus (missing units, missing integral setup on calculator answers, skipping condition checks on the Mean Value Theorem).
Limitation: released full MCQ sections are less common. Supplement MCQ elsewhere.
Cost: free.
Prep books
Princeton Review, Barron's, and 5 Steps to a 5 each include two or three full-length practice exams with MCQs and FRQs. For AP Calc AB, prep book MCQs are the easiest way to get exam-realistic MCQ volume outside of the small number of released papers.
Use them for timed mock exams in the last four to six weeks. The AB exam is 3 hours 10 minutes; doing at least one full mock under strict timing builds the pacing you need for both sections. Note that the multiple-choice section is now answered in Bluebook, so a paper mock won't fully match exam day.
Limitation: prep book FRQ scoring guides are simplifications. For scoring calibration on FRQs, trust the official released materials.
Cost: 30.

Get started for free!Khan Academy AP Calculus AB
Khan Academy's AP Calc AB course organizes MCQ practice by topic (limits, derivatives, integrals, applications). For a computational subject like calculus, being able to drill specifically on related rates or on the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in isolation is often more useful than mixed practice early in the year.
Use it as the primary MCQ source across the year. Sal Khan's video explanations are also unusually good for AP Calc; students who struggle with a specific concept often find one Khan video resolves what a textbook chapter didn't.
Limitation: lighter on FRQ format specifically. Khan's approach doesn't map onto the 30-minute or 60-minute FRQ sections. Pair with released FRQs.
Cost: free.
Cognito AP Calculus AB past papers
Cognito's AP Calc AB offering is a past-papers library rather than a full course: every released FRQ organized by year, with worked solutions that show the exact setup, integrand notation, and units the rubric rewards. The advantage over accessing College Board's raw scoring guides is that the worked solutions walk through the intended reasoning line by line, which makes calibration faster for self-teachers.
Use it as the primary structured FRQ resource, paired with Khan Academy for MCQ volume.
Limitation: past papers, not a full content course. You'll need textbook or Khan video content review alongside.
Cost: subscription.
How to sequence your practice
October to February: work through content unit by unit, using Khan Academy MCQ practice as you finish each topic. From January, start writing one released FRQ per week, self-scored against the scoring guide. March: increase to two FRQs per week and add MCQ practice from a prep book. April: two full timed mock exams (both sections, full 3 hours 10 minutes). In the final week, review your own scored FRQs to remind yourself of the specific setup mistakes you've been making rather than adding new material.
