AP Calculus AB (usually shortened to AP Calc AB) is the College Board's year-long single-variable calculus course, roughly equivalent to a first-semester college calculus class. You learn limits, derivatives, integrals, and how each connects to real-world rates of change, motion, area and accumulation. The exam runs 3 hours 10 minutes and is one of the most-taken math APs in the country, with about 292,000 students sitting it in May 2026.
AP Calc AB is the on-ramp to AP Calc BC. BC covers everything in AB plus a second semester of college calculus (series, parametric equations, polar coordinates). If you want strong college math credit without the extra content load, AB is the sensible choice.

What AP Calculus AB covers
The course is organized around eight units that build on each other in a strict order. You can't skip ahead: Unit 3 (differentiation techniques) needs unit 2 (derivative basics), which needs unit 1 (limits). The good news is that once you understand the underlying structure (limits define derivatives, derivatives define integrals via the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus), the units start to feel like variations on a small number of core ideas.

Two things stand out. Unit 6 (integration) is the largest single unit, and units 4 and 5 (applications of differentiation) together take up roughly a third of the exam. Between them, derivative applications and integration make up the bulk of what gets tested. The earlier units (limits, differentiation basics) are the foundation, but they don't dominate the paper by weight; they dominate it by being prerequisites for everything else.
The skill categories the CED lists are worth internalizing: Implementing procedures (computing a derivative or integral correctly), connecting representations (moving between a graph, a table, a symbolic expression and words), justifying reasoning (writing out why your answer is correct), and using notation. That last one matters: The FRQ rubrics deduct points for sloppy notation even when the answer is right.
How the AP Calculus AB exam is structured
The exam runs 3 hours 10 minutes total and splits into two sections, each with two parts. The parts differ on whether calculator use is allowed. It is a hybrid digital exam: you answer the multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app and handwrite your free-response answers in a paper booklet.

The six free-response questions cover a fixed set of question types. Knowing which type is which and roughly what each expects lets you triage on the day.

Notation costs points on the FRQ section. Writing an integral without dx, forgetting the +C on an indefinite integral, or dropping the dy/dx on an implicit differentiation step will lose you a point even when the final answer is right. AP readers are trained to catch this.

The College Board allows graphing calculators from a specific approved list; the TI-84 Plus family, the TI-Nspire (CAS and non-CAS versions are both permitted on AP Calculus exams), and Casio equivalents are the most common. Bluebook also provides a built-in Desmos graphing calculator on the calculator-active parts. On calculator sections, you can use the calculator to graph, compute numerical derivatives at a point, compute definite integrals, and solve equations.
That said, calculator sections aren't just "the easy ones". They typically include problems that would be tedious or impossible by hand: A definite integral of a messy expression, a related rate that needs numerical solving, or a problem where you need to graph two curves and find their intersection. The point is to test whether you can use the calculator as a tool, not whether you know how to differentiate f(x) = x squared.
On non-calculator sections, the arithmetic is deliberately clean. If your working is producing ugly fractions, you're probably making an error. Common non-calculator moves you should have automated: Product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, u-substitution for common integrals, integration by parts (although AB doesn't emphasize this the way BC does), and standard derivatives and integrals of trig, exponential and log functions.
AP Calculus AB scoring and pass rates
AP Calc AB has run a middle-of-the-pack pass rate for STEM APs. In May 2026, 65 percent of students scored a 3 or higher and 20 percent earned a 5, figures that have been broadly stable for several years and that reflect a self-selected student pool. Here's the 2026 breakdown.

The distribution is top-heavy but with a large 2 band: in 2026, 48 percent of students earned a 4 or 5 while 24 percent earned a 2. The 3 band is comparatively thin, at 17 percent. That reflects the reality of calc prep. Students who genuinely understand the material tend to score high; students who never quite got past mechanical procedure struggle across the whole paper.
Grade boundaries aren't published as fixed percentages. Raw scores are converted to the 1 to 5 scale each year. The College Board doesn't publish the cutoffs, but estimates reconstructed from released practice exams put a 5 at roughly two thirds of the available points; treat any specific figure as a ballpark. The FRQ section is where the boundary points are usually won or lost.
Prerequisites and who should take AP Calc AB
The College Board recommends that students have completed pre-calculus (or a strong Algebra 2 with trigonometry) before AP Calc AB. In practice, most students take AB in junior or senior year after finishing pre-calculus in the year prior.
Students who do well tend to have solid algebra and trigonometry fluency. Calculus is unforgiving of shaky algebra: Every problem builds on manipulating expressions, and a wrong algebra step early on carries through the rest of the problem. If you're regularly making sign errors or fraction mistakes in pre-calculus, that's a warning sign to address before starting AB.
Beyond that, students who do well are comfortable with abstraction (the definition of a derivative as a limit isn't a piece of arithmetic, it's an idea) and willing to write out steps rather than skip to the answer. FRQ points come from process, not just the final number.
A high-level study strategy
Timed past-paper practice is the highest-return activity in Calc AB prep. AP Central posts the free-response questions and scoring guidelines for roughly the three most recent exams, and the question types repeat with high consistency year to year. If you've worked through 20 or so released FRQs across the main question types, most of what you see on the day will look familiar.
For the first two months of the course, prioritize algebraic and trigonometric fluency alongside unit 1 (limits). If you can compute limits by direct substitution, by factoring, and by the special limit forms (sin x over x as x approaches 0) without hesitation, you've done the setup work.
For the middle months, drill derivative and integral techniques until they're automatic. There aren't that many rules (power rule, product, quotient, chain for derivatives; u-substitution, standard antiderivatives for integrals) but they need to be at fingertip speed. A common failure mode is students who "understand" the chain rule but still take 90 seconds to apply it in the middle of a longer problem.
For the last two months, shift to full timed past papers. One paper a week from March onwards is a reasonable pace, with FRQs marked against the College Board's released rubrics rather than just self-scored.
