Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in National 5 Chemistry?

Accepted Answer

Six-mark extended-response questions reward the quality and depth of your explanation, not just a list of chemical facts. Thinking in terms of levels of response is a helpful framework: a basic answer simply names relevant ideas, a stronger answer explains them using correct chemical terminology, and a full-marks answer integrates ideas and supports every conclusion with clear evidence or justification.

The spec highlights skills like drawing valid conclusions supported by evidence and evaluating experimental procedures, so focus on explaining the "why" at each step rather than just describing the "what." Our exam practice questions show you what a high-scoring response looks like, and we'd suggest using the blurt technique on a few 6-mark questions to test how much depth your explanations really have before comparing them with the mark scheme.

Question 2

What do the levels in the National 5 Chemistry mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

The National 5 Chemistry mark scheme doesn't use a "levels of response" system in the way some other awarding bodies do. The qualification is graded A to D (with No Award below that), where a grade A reflects a consistently high level of performance across the skills, knowledge and understanding of the course, and a grade C reflects successful performance in those same areas.

Our exam practice questions are a good place to see the kinds of responses that earn marks, particularly for the extended-response questions in Section 2, where the depth and accuracy of your chemistry explanations really matter. We'd suggest working through past questions alongside Qualifications Scotland's published marking instructions, which set out exactly what each mark requires.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice questions are organised by topic, so you can focus on the specific areas of the N5 Chemistry course where you need the most work, whether that's rates of reaction, formulae and reacting quantities, or nuclear chemistry. Past papers give you a full mixed exam in one sitting, which is great for building stamina and getting used to the real format, but they make it harder to target a particular weakness.

The two approaches complement each other well. We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice to build confidence in individual areas first, then moving to past papers (available on the Qualifications Scotland website) once you feel ready to tackle the full question paper under timed conditions.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

A useful starting point is to aim for roughly 1.5 minutes per mark, since the question paper carries 80 marks and you have 2 hours to complete it. In Section 1 (the 20-mark objective test), you can usually move more quickly because each question is multiple choice and needs no written explanation. Section 2 (60 marks of restricted and extended response) is where pacing matters most, so we'd suggest moving on if you get stuck on a question rather than letting one item eat into the time you need for the rest of the paper. Our exam practice questions are a great way to build a feel for that rhythm before the real thing.
