Everything on the GCSE Biology Animal & Plant Cells poster is written out below, section by section. Use it to search the sheet, copy parts into your own notes, or check a fact quickly.
Eukaryotic Cells
Animal and plant cells are eukaryotic – they have a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Both cell types carry out the same basic life processes, but plant cells have extra structures for support and photosynthesis.
Shared Organelles
These structures are found in both animal and plant cells.
Cell membrane
Controls which substances enter and leave the cell.
Cytoplasm
A jelly-like region where most chemical reactions take place.
Nucleus
Contains the cell's genetic material (DNA) and controls the cell's activities.
Mitochondria
- Site of aerobic respiration.
- Release energy (ATP) for the cell's processes.
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis.
Plant-Only Structures
Plant cells also contain the following, which animal cells do not.
Cell wall
- Made of cellulose.
- Provides support and strength, helping the cell keep its shape.
Permanent vacuole
- A large, fluid-filled sac containing cell sap.
- Helps keep the cell firm and supports the plant.
Chloroplasts
- Contain the green pigment chlorophyll.
- Site of photosynthesis, where glucose is made from carbon dioxide and water using light energy.
