AP Statistics (usually shortened to AP Stats) is the College Board's year-long introductory statistics course, roughly equivalent to a first-semester college stats class. You learn how to describe data, how to design studies, how probability works, and how to draw inferences about a population from a sample. The exam runs 3 hours and is one of the more popular math APs, especially for students who don't want to commit to calculus.
AP Stats is different from the calculus APs in an important way: There's much less pure procedure and much more interpretation. Getting the right number isn't enough. You need to explain what the number means in context, what conditions had to be met, and what conclusion the data actually supports. Students who like writing about ideas usually take to it faster than students who only want to compute.

What AP Statistics covers
For 2026–27 the College Board revised the course and consolidated it into five units. Units 1 and 2 cover the foundations: How to summarize data, how studies are designed, and how probability and probability distributions work. Units 3 and 4 cover statistical inference for proportions and means, and Unit 5 covers regression analysis.

Two patterns are worth internalizing. First, inference (units 3 and 4) is a large share of the exam, 25 to 45 percent of the MCQ weight, and one of the four FRQs is a dedicated inference question. The whole first half of the course is really setup: You learn to describe data and think probabilistically so that you can do inference confidently in the second half. Second, the mechanics of inference are almost identical across units 3 and 4. Every inference procedure has the same four-part structure: State the parameter and hypotheses, check conditions, compute the test statistic and p-value or confidence interval, and interpret in context. Once you're fluent in that structure, learning a new test is mostly learning which formula to plug into the third step.
On descriptive stats: Unit 1 (one-variable data and collecting data) is the most heavily weighted unit, at 20 to 30 percent. Boxplots, histograms, shape/center/spread language, and identifying outliers all show up repeatedly, both on their own and inside inference problems where you first have to describe the data before analyzing it.
How the AP Statistics exam is structured
The exam runs 3 hours total and splits evenly by weight between two sections.

The 42 multiple-choice questions (each with four answer choices) cover the full range of course content, with a heavy skew toward inference. Many of them are context-rich: A short scenario followed by a specific question. Reading the scenario carefully is often more important than remembering a formula.
The free-response section has four questions, each worth 10 points (about 22 minutes each). Question 1 focuses on formulating questions and collecting data, Question 2 on analyzing data and interpreting results, Question 3 is an inference question, and Question 4 combines several practices and content areas.
The four free-response questions
The investigative task that used to be Question 6 was retired in the 2026–27 revision. Instead, three of the four FRQs are multi-focus questions that ask you to move between designing a study, analyzing data and interpreting results, often in an unfamiliar context. The fourth, Question 3, is a dedicated inference question.
The scoring guidelines reward clear communication and correct reasoning in context. Writing out your thinking (for example, "the sample was randomly selected, so we can generalize to the population") shows the reader your reasoning as well as your answer.
With four equally weighted questions in 90 minutes, about 20 to 22 minutes per question is a sensible budget.
Every inference FRQ answer needs three moves in writing: State (parameter and hypotheses), check (conditions and assumptions), and conclude (interpret in context, tied back to the original scenario). Skipping any of the three loses points even when the arithmetic is right.

AP Stats provides a formula sheet on both sections of the exam. It includes standard deviation formulas, the regression line equation, and the test statistics for every inference procedure. That sounds generous, but the sheet only helps if you already know which formula you're reaching for. Students who don't know which test to use won't be rescued by the sheet.
What the sheet does give you: A useful check on notation, and one less thing to memorize by rote. What it doesn't give you: The conditions for each test, the correct degrees of freedom in every setting, or the interpretation of a confidence interval. Those still have to live in your head.
On calculators: From May 2027 the exam is fully digital in Bluebook, which includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator, and you can also bring a graphing calculator from the approved list. The TI-84 Plus family is a common choice, and its built-in stats functions (STAT TESTS menu, distribution calculations, regression fits) do most of the arithmetic you'll need. Learn where each function lives on your specific calculator well before the exam. Fumbling through menus in April costs both time and confidence.
AP Statistics scoring and pass rates
AP Stats has run a middle-of-the-pack pass rate for math APs. The 3+ pass rate is typically around 60 percent: 62 percent in 2026. The 5 rate (17 percent in 2026) is lower than AP Calc AB's (20 percent in 2026). Here's the 2026 breakdown.

The 1 rate on AP Stats is higher than on most other math APs. One likely factor is the FRQ section. Students who can handle multiple-choice content still lose points on FRQs by writing conclusions that don't tie back to the original context, by skipping the condition check, or by using vague probability language. The FRQs reward precise statistical communication in a way MCQs can't fully test.
Grade boundaries aren't published. Raw scores are converted to the 1 to 5 scale each year, and the College Board doesn't release the cut points for recent exams, so any percentage you see online is an unofficial estimate. The revised 2027 exam format also means older estimates may not carry over.
Prerequisites and who should take AP Stats
For 2026–27 the College Board removed the second-year algebra prerequisite: AP Stats is now an option for any student who has completed a first-year algebra course. There's no calculus prerequisite; the course intentionally avoids calculus-based derivations, which is why it's accessible to students who aren't in a calc track.
AP Stats often gets taken by students who want a math AP but not a calculus one. That includes students planning to major in the social sciences, business, biology, psychology or communications, all of which use statistics far more than calculus in undergraduate coursework. It's also a common second math AP for students who take Calc AB or BC in a different year.
Students who do well tend to be comfortable with careful writing (it is less computational than the calculus APs), able to keep a scenario in mind while working (context matters throughout), and willing to memorize a specific vocabulary set (sampling distribution, Type I error, standard error, p-value, power). What AP Stats is not: It's not a light math class. The pass rate says otherwise, and students who assume it's easier than calculus often underestimate the written FRQ work.
A high-level study strategy
One of the most effective levers in AP Stats prep is timed past-paper FRQ practice with careful marking against the rubric. The FRQ rubrics are specific about what counts as a complete answer, and the best way to build a feel for that specificity is to write full answers and compare them line by line to the rubric.
For the first two months of the course, focus on descriptive stats and probability. If you can describe a distribution by shape, center, spread and outliers in one sentence, and if you're fluent with basic probability rules and expected value, you've done the setup for the inference chapters.
For the middle months, learn each inference procedure by writing out its full four-part structure (state, check, compute, conclude) for at least one worked example. Don't jump to "just plug into the calculator" until you can write the structure from memory. The FRQ rubric rewards structure, not shortcuts.
For the last two months, shift to full timed past papers. One paper a week from March onwards is a reasonable pace, and a note that released FRQs from before 2027 follow the old six-question format and include some topics that were removed (such as inference for slopes and chi-square goodness of fit), so use the sample questions in the revised CED to practice the new format.
