Question 1

How do I know if I've properly learned a topic in Physics?

Accepted Answer

The clearest sign you've properly learned a topic is that you can answer questions on it without looking at your notes, which is exactly what active recall training is for. In AQA GCSE Physics, the exam tests three layers: knowledge and understanding (AO1), applying that knowledge to unfamiliar contexts (AO2), and analysing and evaluating information (AO3), so a topic is truly secure when you can handle all three, not just recall the definitions.

Our quizzes are built to work through all these levels, so scoring consistently well on a topic and being able to explain your reasoning on the harder questions is a strong signal you're there. Physics also carries a minimum of 30% maths marks across the two papers, so we'd suggest checking that you can rearrange and substitute values into the relevant equations confidently, not just recognise them.

Question 2

How often should I quiz myself when revising GCSE Physics?

Accepted Answer

Quizzing yourself little and often is far more effective than cramming, so we'd suggest spreading your quiz sessions across the week rather than saving them for one long revision block. Spaced retrieval, where you revisit topics at growing intervals, is one of the most evidence-backed study techniques available, and our quizzes are built to support exactly that pattern.

For AQA GCSE Physics Higher, we'd suggest working through our by-topic quizzes as you finish each topic, then returning to earlier topics every few days to check what's stuck. Physics has a high maths demand (at least 30% of marks assess mathematical skills), so regular quizzing on equations and calculations is especially worthwhile alongside the conceptual content.

Question 3

Should I do a quiz before or after reading the notes?

Accepted Answer

Trying the quiz before reading the notes is a great idea, and there's solid evidence-based reasoning behind it. This approach is called pre-testing, and it primes your brain to notice and absorb the information it just struggled to retrieve when it meets it in the notes.

For AQA GCSE Physics Higher, we'd suggest attempting a topic quiz first, then working through our notes to fill in the gaps, and then quizzing yourself again to check what's stuck. That second pass with our flashcards or quizzes turns the whole process into spaced retrieval, which is one of the most effective ways to build long-term memory.

Question 4

What's the difference between Cognito's quizzes and the actual exam questions?

Accepted Answer

The actual AQA GCSE Physics papers use a mix of multiple choice, structured questions, closed short answer and open response questions, and at least 30% of the marks directly test maths skills. Our quizzes are designed for retrieval practice rather than to replicate that full exam experience: they focus on checking whether you can recall and apply individual concepts quickly, which is a different cognitive challenge from working through a multi-part exam question.

In the real papers, you'll also encounter AO2 and AO3 questions that ask you to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, analyse data, or evaluate experimental procedures, and the longer open-response answers reward extended written reasoning. Our quizzes are best used to build the confident knowledge base that underpins all of that, so we'd suggest pairing them with our exam practice to get comfortable with the full range of question types AQA uses.
