Question 1

When should I start doing AQA GCSE Physics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Past-paper practice works best when you weave it into your revision from early in the course, rather than saving everything for the final few weeks before your May/June exams. Our by-topic view lets you work through past-paper questions on individual topics as soon as your class has covered them.

This kind of spaced retrieval across the year helps the content stick far more effectively than a last-minute burst. We'd suggest saving 2–3 complete papers (each 1 hour 45 minutes) for the final stretch, ideally timed to coincide with your school mocks.

That way you're using the full papers to identify remaining gaps rather than encountering the format for the first time under pressure.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

How many papers you do matters less than how you use them: the spec has been running since 2018, giving you a solid bank to work through, and we'd suggest focusing on quality over quantity. Spending time reviewing each paper carefully after attempting it, understanding exactly where marks were lost and why, will move your grade further than rushing through lots of papers without that reflection.

We'd suggest starting with our by-topic exam practice to build confidence across all eight topics before moving to full papers, then spacing your paper attempts out across your revision period rather than clustering them together. Our exam practice section covers both Paper 1 (Topics 1-4) and Paper 2 (Topics 5-8), so you can track your progress right across the course.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with the clock running is one of the best ways to prepare, because each AQA GCSE Physics paper gives you 1 hour 45 minutes to answer 100 marks worth of questions, and that time pressure is a genuine part of the exam experience.

We'd suggest building your content knowledge first using our notes and flashcards, then moving to timed practice once you feel more confident with the material. When you're ready to go timed, we'd also suggest keeping the AQA equation sheet to hand (it's provided in every real paper), and reviewing what you got wrong afterwards using active recall, which is where a lot of the learning happens.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful feedback rather than a final verdict on where you'll end up. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and grouping them by topic: Papers 1 and 2 each cover four distinct topics (Topics 1–4 on Paper 1; Topics 5–8 on Paper 2), so this quickly shows whether your gaps are concentrated in one area or spread across the paper.

It's also worth thinking about why you lost the marks. Were the questions asking you to recall facts (that's AO1), apply knowledge to a new situation (AO2), or analyse and evaluate data (AO3)? Our notes and flashcards are great for shoring up AO1 recall, while our exam practice builds the application and analysis skills that make up a large share of the available marks. Our by-topic view lets you home in on exactly the sections where you need more work, and using active recall (closing your notes and writing down everything you can remember before checking) is one of the most effective ways to make the content stick.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The official mark scheme for each AQA GCSE Physics past paper is available on AQA's website alongside the paper itself, so we'd suggest downloading both before you begin marking. For structured and calculation questions, work through the mark scheme point by point, checking whether your answer captures each credited idea or correct value.

Open-response questions on this spec use levels-of-response marking, where the examiner awards a band based on the overall quality of your explanation rather than ticking off individual points, so focus on whether your answer builds a clear chain of reasoning rather than hunting for specific words. AQA also publishes an examiner's report alongside each mark scheme, which gives direct advice on where students commonly drop marks and is well worth reading once you've finished. Our exam practice section includes worked examples that show what a strong answer looks like across the different question types on this paper, which can really help when you're unsure how generous to be with your own work.

Question 6

How does Cognito group AQA past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view groups every AQA past-paper question under one of the eight specification topics (Energy, Electricity, Particle model of matter, Atomic structure, Forces, Waves, Magnetism and electromagnetism, and Space physics), so you can pull up every past question on, say, Forces without hunting through full papers.

There are three moments when this is especially useful: just before an end-of-unit test, when you can focus entirely on the topic you've just finished; after mocks, when your results flag a weaker area and you want concentrated practice on exactly that topic; and in the final run-up to the exam, when working through topics one by one using spaced retrieval helps move knowledge into long-term memory more reliably than re-reading notes.

Our exam practice also labels which questions fall under Paper 1 (Topics 1–4) or Paper 2 (Topics 5–8), so you can target the right paper when revision time is short.
