Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might think is a really good idea, and our by-topic view makes that straightforward from day one. We'd suggest working through topic-by-topic past-paper questions as you finish each section of the course (forces and motion, electricity, waves, and so on), rather than waiting until you've covered everything.

This keeps the content fresh and helps you spot gaps while there's still time to go over them. Then, in the final weeks before your exam, save two or three full papers so you can build up to the complete 2-hour, 110-mark format of the Physics Paper 1.

Your school mocks are a natural checkpoint for this: treat them as a signal to shift from topic-based practice to full-paper runs. Our exam practice section organises questions by topic to make the earlier phase much easier to manage.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There is one Physics paper in this qualification (Physics Paper 1, code 4SD0/1P), and a particularly useful quirk to know: it is the exact same paper sat by separate Edexcel International GCSE Physics (4PH1) candidates, so all their past papers are equally valid practice for you too. We'd suggest working through as many series as you can access, prioritising the most recent ones since they best reflect the current question style. Our by-topic exam practice is a great complement if you want to focus on specific areas before tackling a full paper.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with an eye on the clock is one of the best ways to prepare for the Physics Paper 1, which runs for 2 hours and covers 110 marks. We'd suggest building up to this gradually, spending time on our notes and topic-by-topic exam practice first so you feel comfortable with the content before attempting a full paper. Once you feel ready, replicating exam conditions helps you develop a real sense of pacing across the different question styles: multiple-choice, short-answer, calculations and extended open-response questions. Our exam practice section is a great place to build that question-by-question confidence before going full-length.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is really useful information rather than a reason to worry. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and grouping your mistakes by topic, whether that's Forces and motion, Electricity, Waves, or any of the other areas in the spec.

Once you've identified where the gaps are, our notes and flashcards are a great place to revisit the underlying content before you try another paper. It's also worth thinking about the type of question that tripped you up, since the Physics paper uses multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response questions, and each of those tests a slightly different skill. If calculations are the issue, working through more of those question types using our exam practice will help build your confidence. If it's extended open-response questions, the blurt technique (writing out everything you know on a topic from memory before checking your notes) is a great way to strengthen recall so your answers feel more fluent under pressure.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The first thing to check is the paper code: your Physics Paper 1 is shared between the Double Award (4SD0/1P) and the separate Physics IGCSE (4PH1/1P), so mark schemes published under either code apply to your paper. Pearson note that their mark schemes are designed to be clear and straightforward, which makes self-marking more manageable.

The paper includes multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response questions, and the marking guidance differs for each type, so we'd suggest reading the mark scheme instructions at the start before you begin. For calculations, check whether marks are available for working as well as the final answer; for extended open-response questions, read the level descriptors to match your response to a band rather than counting individual points.

Our exam practice includes model answers that help you calibrate your marking on those longer questions before you check the official mark scheme.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view sorts past-paper questions into the eight Physics topics from the Pearson Edexcel specification: Forces and motion, Electricity, Waves, Energy resources and energy transfer, Solids, liquids and gases, Magnetism and electromagnetism, Radioactivity and particles, and Astrophysics.

This means you can focus your practice on exactly the area you need, rather than working through a full paper at random. We'd suggest using the by-topic view just before an end-of-unit test to target that specific topic, when your mock results flag a weaker area so you can go back over it directly, and during your final revision run-up to work through each topic in turn.
