Question 1

How long does it take to memorise the GCSE Physics vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

It's a fair question, especially if exams feel close, and the honest answer is that it varies quite a bit from student to student. What the research does tell us is that spaced retrieval (returning to the same flashcards across several short sessions spread over days and weeks, rather than cramming) tends to reduce the total time needed and helps vocabulary stick far longer.

Our flashcards are built to support this approach, so working through a topic's cards and then revisiting them a few days later is much more effective than one long session. For higher tier, we'd suggest a steady daily batch, always cycling back to anything you found tricky, and you may find the vocabulary becoming automatic sooner than you expect.

Question 2

How many flashcards should I do a day?

Accepted Answer

The honest answer is that consistency matters more than hitting a specific number, and we'd suggest starting with around 20–30 flashcards in short focused sessions rather than cramming a large batch all at once. Spaced retrieval, where you space out your reviews and return to tricky cards more often, is one of the most evidence-backed ways to make content stick for Physics. Our flashcards are organised by topic, so you can focus on whichever area you're currently working through and build up steadily from there.

Question 3

Should I make my own Physics flashcards or use Cognito's?

Accepted Answer

The choice between making your own flashcards and using ours really comes down to how much time you have and where you are in your revision. Our flashcards are built directly from the Edexcel Combined Science spec (1SC0) and cover the higher tier Physics content, so they save you the work of figuring out what to include.

That said, there is genuine learning value in writing cards yourself, because deciding what matters and phrasing it in your own words helps the content stick. A great middle ground is the blurt technique: close everything, write down from memory everything you can recall about a topic, then open our flashcards to see what you missed.

We'd suggest using our flashcards as your primary resource, especially in the run-up to your exams when time is tight, and reserving the card-making effort for the topics where you know you are still shaky.

Question 4

Which Pearson Edexcel Physics topics are flashcards best for?

Accepted Answer

Flashcards work well across Pearson Edexcel Physics for recalling definitions, units, and key terminology, but a few topics reward them particularly well. Topic 1 (Key concepts of physics) is worth prioritising first, since it appears on both your Physics papers and its vocabulary underpins every other topic you'll be asked about.

Topics like Topic 6 (Radioactivity), Topic 4 (Waves), Topic 5 (Light and the electromagnetic spectrum), and Topic 14 (Particle model) are all rich in precise terminology and facts that suit spaced retrieval well. For calculation-heavy topics such as Topic 2 (Motion and forces) or Topic 10 (Electricity and circuits), our flashcards help you internalise which equations and rules apply, and we'd suggest pairing them with our exam practice to build the problem-solving side too.

Question 5

Why do I keep forgetting GCSE Physics vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

Physics vocabulary sticks poorly when you read it passively rather than actively testing yourself on it. That's a memory issue rather than an intelligence one, and the good news is it's very fixable.

Spaced retrieval is the evidence-backed approach here: revisiting a term a little further apart each time (today, in two days, then in five) keeps the memory trace strong without it feeling like a slog. Our flashcards are built exactly for this, so the terms you keep missing surface more often until they stick.

We'd suggest starting with Topic 1 (Key concepts of physics), since Edexcel tests it on both Physics Paper 1 and Paper 2, which means those definitions are doubly worth knowing.
