To reach the top band, your answer needs to cover the relevant physics accurately (drawing on your AO1 knowledge and understanding), apply those ideas clearly to whatever scenario the question sets up (AO2), and present everything in a logical order so your thinking is easy to follow.

Rather than ticking off individual facts, the examiner reads your whole answer and places it into a level based on the overall quality of your scientific reasoning, how well you link ideas together, and how relevant your content is to the question asked. Our exam practice lets you focus on specific topics from the spec, so if you're shaky on Topic 6 (Radioactivity) or Topic 10 (Electricity and circuits), you can give those areas more attention without working through a whole paper each time.

Past papers are also a finite resource, so we'd suggest saving them for the later stages of your revision, once you've built topic-by-topic confidence using our notes, flashcards and exam practice. Our by-topic view makes it easy to spot where your gaps are and focus your time there first.

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Each Physics paper gives you 70 minutes to answer 60 marks' worth of questions, which works out to just over a minute per mark. A good rule of thumb is to spend roughly 1 minute per mark, so a 3-mark question gets around 3 minutes and a 6-mark extended response gets around 6 minutes.

That ratio also leaves you a small buffer of about 10 minutes to check back through your work. For higher tier, we'd suggest using that time to revisit any calculation questions, since at least 30% of marks on these papers involve maths and it's easy to drop a unit or misread a value under pressure.
