Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early and building it up gradually is one of the most effective approaches for 1GB0. We'd suggest using our exam practice by topic as soon as you finish each part of the course, so you're testing yourself on content while it's still fresh rather than leaving everything until the final term.

This kind of spaced retrieval, where you revisit material through questions at regular intervals, helps knowledge stick far better than cramming everything at once. As mocks approach, we'd suggest stepping up to full papers across all three components (Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3), which also helps you get comfortable with the decision-making style of Paper 3. Save two or three complete papers for the final weeks before your May/June exams, so you have fresh material to build confidence right when you need it most.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but your practice tends to pay off most when you spread it across all three papers rather than repeating the same one. Because 1GB0 has distinct papers (Paper 1: Global Geographical Issues, Paper 2: UK Geographical Issues and Fieldwork, and Paper 3: the decision-making exam), we'd suggest giving Paper 3 particular attention since its source-booklet format feels quite different from Papers 1 and 2.

Our by-topic exam practice on Cognito is a great way to build confidence in weaker areas before you move on to full papers. A useful approach using spaced retrieval is to attempt a paper, check our notes on anything that tripped you up, then return to a fresh paper a week or so later to see how much has stuck.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with past papers is one of the most effective revision strategies, and doing them with a clock running helps you build the time-awareness you'll need on exam day. Your three papers have different time allowances: Paper 1 and Paper 3 are each 1 hour 30 minutes, while Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes, so it's worth experiencing each paper's rhythm separately rather than treating them as interchangeable. We'd suggest working through our notes and exam practice questions by topic first to get the content solid, then moving on to full papers once you feel confident with the material. Paper 3 is particularly worth approaching this way, since the decision-making format requires you to read and analyse a sources booklet within the same time limit, which is a skill that genuinely improves with practice.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low score on a past paper is genuinely disheartening, but it's one of the most useful data points you can have right now. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme carefully for every question you dropped marks on, because Edexcel Geography often rewards specific geographical terminology and structured arguments, particularly in the extended writing questions that appear across all three papers.

Once you can see a pattern (content gaps, poor timing, or struggling with a particular question type), head back to our notes to fill those gaps and use our flashcards to reinforce the case study detail that the 8-mark questions on Papers 1 and 2, and the 12-mark decision question on Paper 3, tend to demand.

Spaced retrieval is especially effective at this stage: revisiting the topics where you dropped marks over several short sessions, rather than one long sitting, gives the knowledge a much greater chance to stick before you attempt another paper.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The Pearson Edexcel mark scheme is your best friend for self-marking, and using it well is a skill worth developing early. For straightforward questions (multiple-choice and short factual or numerical answers), simply compare your response to the accepted answers in the mark scheme and award the marks directly.

The trickier part is the extended writing questions, where 8-mark and 12-mark responses are judged using levels-of-response descriptors rather than a simple checklist of points. We'd suggest reading the level descriptors carefully to identify which level your answer sits in, then asking yourself whether your case study evidence and geographical terminology pushed you towards the top or bottom of that level.

It's also worth noting that up to 4 marks across each paper are awarded for spelling, punctuation, grammar and use of specialist terminology, so factor those in as a separate step. Our exam practice includes worked examples that show you what a strong response looks like, which makes it much easier to judge your own work honestly rather than being too generous or too harsh.
