Question 1

How do I know if I've properly learned a topic in Biology?

Accepted Answer

You'll know a topic is properly learned when you can answer Higher-tier exam questions on it without needing to check your notes. That's the real test, exam questions demand recall, application, and analysis (the three assessment objectives), so if you can handle those under pressure, the knowledge has stuck.

We'd suggest using our quizzes and exam practice to check yourself. Start with a quiz on the topic, if you're scoring well, move to timed exam questions. The questions will tell you pretty quickly whether you've got the foundations down or whether there are still gaps. If you find yourself re-reading the question three times or guessing between two answers, that's a sign the content needs another pass.

**A useful self-test:** Try the blurt technique.

Question 2

How often should I quiz myself when revising GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest quizzing yourself little and often rather than in marathon sessions. The evidence behind spaced retrieval shows that frequent, short bursts of testing (20–30 minutes a day, for example) help information stick far better than cramming everything into one long block.

**A practical rhythm:**
Start by using our quizzes after you've revised a topic, pre-testing primes your brain to notice what matters when you come back to the notes. Then revisit the same quiz a few days later, then again a week later. That spacing is what builds long-term recall.

**Track what you're getting wrong:**
Our by-topic view lets you filter quizzes by individual spec points (Topic 1: Key concepts in biology, Topic 2: Cells and control, and so on). If you're consistently stumbling on, say, osmosis or genetic diagrams, that's your signal to go back to the notes and then re-quiz that same content a day or two later.

Question 3

Should I do a quiz before or after reading the notes?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest doing the quiz **before** you read the notes, it sounds counterintuitive, but there's solid evidence behind it.

This approach is called pre-testing. When you attempt questions without knowing the answers yet, your brain actively searches for the information and flags the gaps. Then, when you read the notes afterwards, you're primed to notice exactly what you missed, and that new knowledge sticks far better than if you'd just read passively from the start.

Our quizzes are designed to work this way. Try the quiz first, see where you struggle, then use our notes to fill in those gaps. You'll remember the content much more effectively than reading first and quizzing second.

Question 4

What's the difference between Cognito's quizzes and the actual exam questions?

Accepted Answer

Our quizzes are designed to help you practise the content and build confidence with the types of questions you'll face in the exam, but they're not the same as Edexcel exam questions in a couple of important ways.

**Format:** Edexcel exam questions often use levels-of-response marking (where your answer needs a logical structure and supporting detail to reach the top level), and many require extended writing across several linked points. Our quizzes are more focused: they test one concept at a time, often with shorter answers, so you can quickly check your understanding and get immediate feedback. That makes them brilliant for active recall when you're revising a topic, but they won't always mimic the full range of question styles you'll see on Papers 1 and 2.

**Difficulty curve:** Edexcel papers mix straightforward AO1 recall (40% of marks) with trickier AO2 application questions (another 40%) and AO3 analysis questions (20%). Our quizzes cover the same content and skills, but we design them to give you manageable practice as you learn, you'll find the full spectrum of difficulty in our exam practice section, which uses real past-paper-style questions.

We'd suggest using our quizzes to test yourself as you work through each topic, then moving to our exam practice once you're confident with the content.
