How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology?

6-mark questions on Edexcel GCSE Biology are the longer-answer questions, they usually test your ability to explain a process, compare two things, or evaluate a claim. They're marked using **levels-of-response** marking, which means the examiner places your answer into one of three levels based on how complete, accurate, and well-explained it is.

**What the levels mean:**

Level 3 (5–6 marks) = a detailed, accurate explanation that covers all the key points the question is asking for, with scientific terminology used correctly. Level 2 (3–4 marks) = some correct points but not the full picture, or missing detail. Level 1 (1–2 marks) = basic, incomplete, or muddled.

**How to hit Level 3:**

First, underline the command word ("Explain", "Compare", "Evaluate") and identify what the question is asking you to do. Then, plan a quick bullet-point list of the key biological points you need to cover.

Mark schemes in GCSE Biology use **levels** to describe the quality of your answer, particularly for longer questions worth 4–6 marks. Each level represents a different standard of response, and the examiner reads your answer to decide which level it fits best before assigning the exact mark.

**What the levels mean:**

Most levels-of-response questions have three levels. Level 1 is the weakest (showing basic understanding), Level 2 is stronger (showing some detail and connections), and Level 3 is the strongest (showing a clear, detailed answer with logical links between ideas). Each level has a mark range, so a Level 3 answer might be worth 5–6 marks, while a Level 1 answer sits at 1–2 marks.

**How examiners use them:**

The examiner first decides which level descriptor your answer matches overall. They then pick the exact mark within that level based on how well you've covered the points.

**Past papers** are released by Pearson Edexcel after each exam series. They're brilliant for timed practice under exam conditions once you've revised all the content, they give you the full experience of sitting a 1 hour 45 minute paper. The downside is that you can't easily filter past-paper questions by topic. If you want to test yourself on Topic 3 (Genetics) after revising it, you'd need to hunt through several whole papers to find the relevant questions.

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

The golden rule is **one minute per mark**, so a 6-mark question gets roughly 6 minutes.

Each paper is 105 minutes long and worth 100 marks, which works out almost perfectly. If you stick to this, you'll have a small cushion at the end for checking or finishing up longer answers.

**In practice:**

We'd suggest keeping an eye on the clock every 20–30 minutes. If you've done 25 marks' worth of questions, you should be around 25 minutes in. That way, you'll spot if you're drifting behind and can adjust.

**When questions feel uneven:**

Some 6-markers take longer than others (extended answers need more planning; calculations can be quicker).
