Question 1

How do I know if I've properly learned a topic in Biology?

Accepted Answer

A good test is to close your notes and try explaining the topic out loud (or on paper) without looking. If you can recall the key ideas and how they connect, you're on the right track. If you're drawing blanks or mixing things up, that's useful feedback, it shows you where to focus next.

Our quizzes are designed for exactly this. They use active recall, which means you're pulling information from memory rather than just re-reading. That retrieval process strengthens the memory itself, so each quiz you complete is making the knowledge stick a little better.

We'd suggest working through the quiz for a topic after you've revised the content in our notes.

Question 2

How often should I quiz myself when revising IGCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest quizzing yourself **little and often** rather than in marathon blocks. Research on spaced retrieval shows that testing yourself repeatedly over time (say, 10–15 minutes a day) helps lock knowledge into long-term memory far better than one big cram session before an exam.

**A good rhythm:**
Quiz yourself on a topic shortly after you've first learned it, then again a day or two later, then again a week later. Each time you retrieve the answer, you're strengthening the memory pathway. Our quizzes are built for exactly this, you can dip in daily, work through a handful of questions by topic, and gradually cover the whole Biology component of Co-ordinated Sciences.

**Timing tip:**
Because your Theory paper (Paper 4) is 2 hours long and covers Biology, Chemistry *and* Physics together, it's worth quizzing yourself across all three sciences in short bursts rather than blocking out huge revision windows for just one. That way you keep all the content fresh and you're ready for the mixed-subject structure of the real papers.

Question 3

Should I do a quiz before or after reading the notes?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest doing a quiz **after** reading the notes first.

Here's why: pre-testing yourself on content you haven't seen yet can feel frustrating, and the guesswork doesn't give you much to build on. Once you've read through the notes, though, a quiz becomes a powerful tool, it shows you what's stuck and what hasn't, so you know exactly where to focus your next round of revision.

That said, if you've already covered the topic in class or revised it before, jumping straight into a quiz works brilliantly. It's a form of active recall, and testing yourself before re-reading the notes can prime your brain to notice gaps and lock in the detail when you do go back to them.

Our quizzes are designed to work alongside the notes, each question links back to the relevant section, so if you get one wrong, you can click through and revisit that bit straight away. That loop of test-review-test is what makes the knowledge stick long-term.

Question 4

What's the difference between Cognito's quizzes and the actual exam questions?

Accepted Answer

Our quizzes are designed to build your understanding of the Biology topics in the 0654 syllabus through spaced retrieval, you'll see questions on cells, respiration, plant nutrition, and all the other chapters multiple times as you work through them. Each quiz focuses on testing recall and application of key concepts, so you're actively strengthening your memory rather than passively re-reading notes.

The actual exam papers are different in a few important ways. First, they test all three sciences together, your Paper 2 (Extended MCQ) and Paper 4 (Extended Theory) cover Biology, Chemistry, and Physics content in the same sitting. Second, the exam questions are designed to hit three assessment objectives: knowledge with understanding (50%), handling information and problem solving (30%), and experimental skills (20%). That means you'll see a mix of straightforward recall, data interpretation, graph analysis, and practical application all in one paper.

Our quizzes lean heavily on AO1 (knowledge with understanding) because that's the foundation you need before tackling the trickier AO2 and AO3 questions.
