Question 1

What does AP Macroeconomics cover?

Accepted Answer

AP Macroeconomics is a one-semester, college-level course that studies how entire economies function, covering everything from basic economic concepts through to international trade and finance.

| Unit | Title | AP Exam Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic Economic Concepts | 5–10% |
| 2 | Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle | 12–17% |
| 3 | National Income and Price Determination | 17–27% |
| 4 | Financial Sector | 18–23% |
| 5 | Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies | 20–30% |
| 6 | Open Economy: International Trade and Finance | 10–13% |

Units 3, 4, and 5 carry the most exam weight, so a solid grasp of the AD–AS model, monetary policy, and the Phillips Curve will take you a long way. Our notes walk through each unit in depth, so you can build your understanding topic by topic and keep track of where the exam places the most emphasis.

Question 2

Where should I start with AP Macroeconomics revision?

Accepted Answer

A solid starting point is getting comfortable with the foundational concepts in Unit 1 (scarcity, the production possibilities curve, and supply and demand), since these underpin everything that follows. From there, we'd suggest prioritizing the higher-weighted units: Unit 3 (National Income and Price Determination) carries 17–27% of the exam, Unit 4 (Financial Sector) carries 18–23%, and Unit 5 (Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies) carries 20–30%, making them the core of your revision time. Graphing skills are tested throughout the entire course, so practicing how to draw and label models like the AD–AS diagram early will pay off across multiple units. Our notes walk through each unit in sequence, which is a reliable path if you're starting fresh, or you can use our by-topic view to target whichever area feels shakiest. Using active recall as you go, by closing the notes and writing out what you remember, helps the content stick far better than re-reading alone.

Question 3

What's on the AP Macroeconomics exam?

Accepted Answer

The AP Macroeconomics exam has two sections, and our notes cover everything you need across all six units.

| Section | Topics covered | Length | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1: Multiple-Choice (60 questions) | All 6 units | 70 minutes | 66% |
| Section 2: Free-Response (3 questions) | All 6 units | 60 minutes | 33% |

The six units span Basic Economic Concepts (5–10% of the exam), Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle (12–17%), National Income and Price Determination (17–27%), the Financial Sector (18–23%), Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies (20–30%), and the Open Economy: International Trade and Finance (10–13%). Units 3, 4, and 5 carry the heaviest combined weighting, so we'd suggest spending extra time in our notes on the AD–AS model, monetary policy, and the Phillips Curve. The free-response section frequently asks you to draw and label graphs accurately, so building active recall of graph structures throughout your studying will pay off on exam day.

Question 4

Can I use these notes as my AP Macroeconomics textbook?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Our notes are designed to cover the full AP Macroeconomics course, walking you through all six units from Basic Economic Concepts all the way to Open Economy and International Trade and Finance. We'd suggest treating them as your main reference for content, using the built-in structure to work through each unit in order.

That said, your teacher's handouts and any College Board materials are worth keeping alongside our notes, since they'll help you see the exact phrasing the exam uses. Our quizzes let you test your recall topic by topic as you go, which is a great way to make the content stick through active recall rather than just re-reading.

Question 5

How do I score a 5 in AP Macroeconomics?

Accepted Answer

Scoring a 5 in AP Macroeconomics means demonstrating you're "extremely well qualified" across both sections: 60 multiple-choice questions (which carry 66% of your score) and 3 free-response questions (which carry 33%). The exact composite score needed for a 5 shifts each year based on candidate performance, so rather than chasing a fixed percentage, focus on building the four course skills: describing and applying economic principles, interpreting outcomes, working through calculations, and drawing accurately labeled graphs.

In practice, scoring a 5 usually looks something like:

- Knowing the AD-AS model thoroughly, since Unit 3 (National Income and Price Determination, 17–27% of the exam) is one of the most heavily weighted areas and graph questions appear in both sections
- Being fluent with calculations involving multipliers, real vs. nominal GDP, unemployment rates, and the CPI
- Giving extra attention to Unit 5 (Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies, 20–30%) and Unit 4 (Financial Sector, 18–23%), which together account for the largest share of exam questions
- Practicing free-response answers with precise graph labels and tight written explanations, since that precision is what separates a 4 from a 5
- Using spaced retrieval with our notes across all six units so nothing fades before the May exam
