Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level Psychology past papers?

Accepted Answer

Many students wonder whether to save past papers until closer to exams, but working through questions by topic as you go is genuinely the more effective approach. Our by-topic exam practice lets you tackle questions on Social psychology or Clinical psychology right after studying those topics, which builds confidence and reinforces understanding through spaced retrieval.

Then, in the final weeks before your May/June exams, we'd suggest saving two or three full papers to use as mocks, so you can experience the timing and pressure of all three papers in one sitting.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through as many past papers as possible is one of the most effective ways to prepare for Edexcel A-Level Psychology, but the quality of your review matters just as much as the number of papers you attempt. We'd suggest treating each paper as a genuine learning opportunity: after completing it, go back through your answers carefully, spot the topic gaps, and revisit our notes to close them before moving on to the next one.

Because this qualification has 3 separate papers, we'd suggest working through all three for each year you tackle, so you build a balanced picture of your performance across Foundations, Applications and Psychological skills. Our exam practice section lets you focus on individual topics first, which is a great way to use active recall before building up to full papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers in the time Pearson Edexcel sets is one of the most valuable things you can do in the final weeks before your 9PS0 exams. Papers 1 and 2 are each 2 hours and 15 minutes long, and paper 3 is 2 hours, so building that stamina and clock-awareness early pays real dividends.

We'd suggest starting with untimed practice on individual topics first, using our notes and flashcards to consolidate the content, then moving to full timed papers once you feel confident. This staged approach also taps into pre-testing, an evidence-based technique where attempting questions before you feel fully ready strengthens memory far more than re-reading alone. Our exam practice section lets you work through questions topic by topic before stepping up to full paper conditions.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is a useful signal rather than a setback, so the first step is to work through the mark scheme carefully and identify where marks were lost. For 9PS0, it helps to think in terms of the three assessment objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding), AO2 (application), and AO3 (analysis and evaluation), since each one calls for a different approach to revision.

If the marks are slipping on AO1, our notes and flashcards are a great place to revisit core content using active recall. If AO3 is the weak spot, working through extended response questions with the mark scheme open beside you will help you see how evaluation points are credited.

We'd suggest focusing on one paper at a time and keeping a simple log of the topic areas where marks consistently fall short, so your revision becomes targeted rather than general.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The Pearson Edexcel mark scheme uses two distinct marking approaches across the papers: point-based marking for shorter questions, and levels-of-response marking for extended response questions.

For point-based questions, work through each mark point in order and award yourself credit only where your answer clearly matches what the mark scheme describes, using the same psychological terminology Edexcel expects. For levels-of-response questions, read each level descriptor holistically and place your whole answer at the level that best fits its overall quality, rather than trying to count individual points.

Our exam practice questions come with guidance on what strong answers look like, which makes self-marking feel a lot less guesswork. We'd suggest reading the Pearson mark scheme alongside our notes so you can see exactly which studies, theories and evaluation points Edexcel is crediting, since spotting those patterns is what really helps the content stick for future papers.
