Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

6-mark questions on Edexcel International GCSE Biology are typically **levels-of-response** questions, which means the examiner places your answer into one of three levels (low, middle, high) based on how complete and well-organised it is. Full marks means hitting the top level, and that requires more than just listing facts.

**What the examiner is looking for:**

A top-level answer demonstrates detailed knowledge (AO1), applies it correctly to the question (AO2), and presents a clear, logical argument. You'll need to cover multiple correct points, usually four to six relevant ideas, and link them together in a structured way. The command word matters: "Explain" wants causes and effects linked together, "Discuss" or "Evaluate" wants pros and cons weighed up.

**How to structure your answer:**

Start by identifying what the question is asking, then plan two or three mini-paragraphs before you write. Each paragraph should make one clear point, explain it, and link it to the question.

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Mark-scheme levels are how examiners assign marks to questions that need a detailed written answer (like "describe" or "explain" questions).

Most mark schemes on your Edexcel IGCSE use either **point-based marking** (where you get 1 mark per correct point you make) or **levels-based marking** (where the examiner reads your whole answer, decides which level it fits, then picks a mark within that level).

**Levels-based marking** is common for longer-answer questions worth 4–6 marks. The examiner looks at the overall quality of your answer, how many correct points you've made, how clearly you've explained the science, and whether you've linked ideas together. The mark scheme will have 3 or 4 levels, often labelled something like Level 0 (no creditworthy content), Level 1 (basic), Level 2 (clear), and Level 3 (detailed). Each level has a mark range (e.g. Level 3 = 5–6 marks, Level 2 = 3–4 marks, Level 1 = 1–2 marks).

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is built from real exam-board questions (Pearson Edexcel past papers and specimen materials), but we've organised them by topic and sub-topic so you can focus on exactly what you need. Instead of working through a whole 2-hour paper, you can practise just "Enzymes" or "Photosynthesis", whatever matches the content you've just revised.

**Topic-by-topic focus:**

Our by-topic view lets you drill into weak spots without the noise of unrelated questions. If you're shaky on respiration, you can work through 15 respiration questions in one sitting, that concentrated practice helps the content stick much faster than scattering those same questions across multiple full papers.

**Instant, structured feedback:**

Every question comes with a full worked solution (not just the answer). We show you the mark scheme, the examiner's thinking, and the key knowledge the question tests. That means you learn from mistakes immediately, rather than waiting days for a teacher to mark a paper.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

The Biology paper (Paper 1) is 2 hours long and worth 110 marks, which works out to just over 1 minute per mark. That's a helpful guide, but the marks are spread unevenly across questions, so you'll need to pace yourself flexibly.

**Short-answer questions** (1–3 marks) should take 1–3 minutes. Read carefully, answer what's asked, and move on. **Longer questions** (6–8 marks) might need 8–10 minutes, especially if they ask you to describe a process step-by-step or evaluate an investigation. Questions testing practical work (AO3) often take a bit longer because you're analysing data or suggesting improvements.

**Our exam practice** shows you the exact mark distribution and question styles for this paper, so you can get a feel for the rhythm.
