Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting past-paper questions topic-by-topic as soon as you've finished learning each section. That means you could begin within the first few weeks of your course, not just in the final sprint.

**Throughout the year:** Use our by-topic exam practice to test yourself on each topic right after you've covered it. This is a form of pre-testing, it shows you what you don't know yet and primes your brain to retain the content when you revisit it. You'll spot patterns in how Edexcel phrases questions, and you'll build confidence with the AO2 (apply knowledge) and AO3 (analyse and evaluate) question types that make up 60% of the marks.

**After your mocks:** Once you've sat your school's mock exams (usually in the spring term), step up to full timed papers. Pick 2 or 3 recent past papers (one Paper 1, one Paper 2, and a spare of either) and complete them under exam conditions, 1 hour 45 minutes, no notes, no pauses.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but we'd suggest aiming for around **4–6 full papers** for each of the two exams (Paper 1 and Paper 2). That gives you enough practice to get familiar with the question styles, timing, and how Edexcel phrases things, without burning out on repetition.

**Start with one or two earlier papers** to see where you are, then use our by-topic exam practice to fill the gaps. Once you're more confident with the content, do another 2–3 papers under timed conditions to build stamina and refine your exam technique. Save the most recent papers for the final few weeks, they're the best guide to current style.

**Don't forget Paper 2.** Students often focus on Paper 1 early on, but Paper 2 covers half the spec (Topics 1, 6, 7, 8, and 9) and deserves equal attention. Topic 1 appears on both papers, so you'll see some overlap, but the rest of Paper 2 is entirely different content.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Doing past papers under timed conditions is one of the best ways to prepare for your Edexcel Biology exams. You'll have 1 hour 45 minutes for each paper, so getting comfortable with that time pressure makes a real difference on exam day.

**When to start timing yourself**

We'd suggest working through past papers untimed at first, once you've revised the relevant topics. This lets you focus on understanding the question styles and writing full answers without the clock adding stress. Then, closer to your exams, switch to timed practice.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark is really useful feedback, it tells you exactly where to focus your revision next.

First, don't skip the mark scheme. Go through every question you dropped marks on and compare your answer to the mark scheme. Look for patterns: are you losing marks on calculations, extended-response questions, or practical-method questions? That pattern is your revision priority.

**Sort your mistakes into buckets:**

We'd suggest three: content gaps (you didn't know the fact), application errors (you knew the content but misapplied it), and exam technique (you knew the answer but didn't write what the question asked for). Content gaps need our notes and flashcards.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own paper with the Edexcel mark scheme takes a bit of practice, but it's a brilliant way to spot gaps before the real exam. Here's how we'd suggest approaching it.

**Start by printing the mark scheme.** Pearson Edexcel publishes the official mark scheme alongside each past paper on their website. You'll want the one that matches your paper code (1BI0/1H or 1BI0/2H for Higher). Open it next to your answers.

**Read the "indicative content" for each question carefully.** The mark scheme lists the specific science points examiners are looking for. For AO1 questions (knowledge recall), you're matching your answer against those bullet points.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

We've tagged every Edexcel GCSE Biology past-paper question by spec topic, so you can filter our exam practice to the exact areas you need.

**How it works:**

Each question is mapped to one of the nine spec topics (Topic 1: Key concepts in biology, Topic 2: Cells and control, and so on through to Topic 9: Ecosystems and material cycles). When you open our exam practice, you'll see a filter that lets you practise just the topics you choose. You can pick a single topic or combine several, the filter updates the question set instantly.

**When to use the by-topic view:**

We'd suggest using it in three scenarios. First, just before an end-of-unit test at school, filter to that topic and work through the past-paper questions to see how the examiner tests it. Second, when a mock flags a weak area (say, you dropped marks on Topic 7: Animal coordination, control and homeostasis), filter to that topic and spend a focused session there.
