Question 1

When should I start doing AQA GCSE Psychology past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might expect is the approach we'd suggest for AQA GCSE Psychology. We'd recommend using our by-topic exam practice from the start of your course, working through questions on each topic as you cover it in class, rather than saving everything until the final revision period.

This is spaced retrieval in action, and it really helps the content stick by testing you on Psychology material before it fully beds in. In the final few weeks before your May/June exams, we'd then suggest setting aside two or three full papers (each 1 hour 45 minutes) to get a feel for the length and pace of both papers back to back. Your school mock exams are also a great checkpoint to gauge your progress across Paper 1 (Cognition and behaviour) and Paper 2 (Social context and behaviour) before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There is no fixed number that guarantees success, but working through every available past paper is a worthwhile goal since each series gives you practice on both Paper 1 (Cognition and behaviour) and Paper 2 (Social context and behaviour), and the more exposure you get to AQA's question styles, the more comfortable you will feel on exam day.

We'd suggest starting with our by-topic exam practice to build confidence on individual areas first, then moving on to full papers once you feel secure across the content. Spacing your papers out over the revision period (rather than doing them all in one go) takes advantage of spaced retrieval, which helps the knowledge stick far more effectively. Each time you finish a paper, review your answers carefully against the mark scheme so you understand the level of detail AQA expects across the multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Past papers work best when you use them in two phases. We'd suggest going through questions without timing yourself first, focusing on what each question is asking and using the mark scheme to understand what a good answer looks like. Once you feel confident with the content, working through the full 1 hour 45 minutes per paper helps you build the pacing and stamina you'll need on the day.

Our exam practice lets you filter questions by topic, so you can target weaker areas before moving to full-paper practice. Spaced retrieval across both phases (returning to questions you found tricky at intervals) is one of the most effective ways to make the content stick.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful, because it shows you exactly where to focus your revision rather than leaving you guessing. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question, noting which topics cost you the most marks and whether the gaps were in knowledge (AO1), application (AO2) or evaluation (AO3).

Once you've spotted the pattern, our notes and flashcards can help you strengthen those specific areas before you attempt the next paper. For extended writing questions in particular, reading the mark scheme wording closely shows you the level of detail and evaluation that AQA rewards. Active recall (testing yourself without looking at your notes first) tends to make the content stick far more effectively than re-reading alone.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

For AQA GCSE Psychology, each paper mixes multiple choice, short answer, and extended writing questions, and marking yourself well means approaching each type slightly differently. Multiple choice answers are straightforward to check against the mark scheme; for short answer questions, we'd suggest matching your response point-by-point against the mark scheme's listed points, only crediting yourself where your answer clearly reflects the language and ideas the mark scheme expects.

For extended writing questions, the mark scheme tends to describe what a strong response looks like in terms of the three assessment objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding), AO2 (application) and AO3 (analysis and evaluation), so reading those descriptions carefully will show you where marks were gained or lost rather than simply counting bullet points. Our exam practice walks you through past questions organised by topic, so once you've marked a paper you can head straight to our notes or flashcards for any area where you dropped credit.

Question 6

How does Cognito group AQA past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view organises AQA past-paper questions around the eight topic areas in the specification, so you can work through every past question on Memory or Social influence without hunting through complete papers. It follows the spec's own structure, grouping Paper 1 content (Memory, Perception, Development, and Research methods) and Paper 2 content (Social influence, Language, thought and communication, Brain and neuropsychology, and Psychological problems) into separate filters.

There are three particularly good moments to use it: just before an end-of-unit test, when you want to focus your practice on the content you have just covered; when your mock results flag a weak area, so you can go straight to those questions rather than re-reading a whole paper; and during topic-by-topic revision in the run-up to the exam, when working through a concentrated set of past questions on each area in turn is a really effective form of active recall.
