Question 1

When should I start doing National 5 Physics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early in the year, rather than saving everything for the revision period, makes a real difference to how confident you feel on exam day. We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice as you finish each area of the course, working through Section 2-style restricted and extended response questions on topics like Dynamics, Electricity, and Waves while the content is still fresh. Then, in the final few weeks before the May diet, we'd suggest keeping two or three full past papers for proper timed runs, giving yourself the 2 hours that Qualifications Scotland allow for the question paper. Your school mock is also a great opportunity to experience a full paper from start to finish, so use the feedback from it to identify which areas still need more attention before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for the N5 Physics exam, and we'd suggest quality over quantity: take time after each paper to understand where your marks went rather than rushing through as many as possible. We'd recommend starting once you've covered the main content areas, using your first paper to identify any gaps, then working through more as the exam approaches.

Our exam practice tool lets you work through questions by topic first, which can build your confidence before you tackle a full paper. When you do work through a complete paper, pay attention to both sections: Section 1 is 20 marks of multiple choice, and Section 2 is 90 marks of restricted and extended response questions.

After each paper, use active recall to revisit any topics where you dropped marks, writing out what you remember before checking your notes. The more papers you complete in the final weeks, the sharper your timing will be for the 2-hour exam.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with the clock running is genuinely useful preparation for a 2-hour question paper, and we'd suggest building it into your revision plan as you get closer to the exam. Timing yourself across both Section 1's multiple-choice questions and the longer written questions in Section 2 helps you judge how to pace your time.

We'd suggest doing a few papers without the timer first, so you can focus fully on the physics before adding the pressure of the clock. Remember to keep a relationships sheet nearby when you do, since Qualifications Scotland provides one in the real exam. Our exam practice lets you work through questions topic by topic first, building confidence through spaced retrieval before you move on to full papers.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is a really useful signal rather than a reason to worry. We'd suggest going through the paper question by question to identify which of the six content areas (Dynamics, Space, Electricity, Properties of matter, Waves, or Radiation) gave you the most trouble, then returning to our notes and flashcards to strengthen those topics before attempting another paper.

Active recall is one of the most effective techniques at this stage: try covering your notes and writing down everything you can remember about a weak topic before checking back. Once you feel more confident, our by-topic exam practice lets you target specific areas so you can build momentum before you tackle a full paper again.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the SQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking a past paper is one of the most effective study techniques available to you, and Qualifications Scotland publishes the marking instructions for each past paper on their official website alongside the question papers themselves. For Section 1 (the objective test), marking is straightforward since each question has a single correct answer. Section 2 requires more care: the marking instructions list the specific points needed for each mark, so we'd suggest reading each acceptable answer carefully and being honest with yourself about whether your response genuinely covers those points rather than just the general idea. Our exam practice on Cognito walks you through the kinds of responses that score well in N5 Physics, which can help you interpret the mark scheme with more confidence as you go.

Question 6

How does Cognito group SQA past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view sorts past-paper questions from SQA (Qualifications Scotland) exams into the six content areas from the specification: Dynamics, Space, Electricity, Properties of Matter, Waves, and Radiation. Rather than working through a full paper from start to finish, you can go straight to the questions that match exactly what you're studying right now.

We'd suggest reaching for it in three situations in particular: just before an end-of-unit test, to check you can answer real exam questions on that area before moving on; when mock results or a practice paper flag a weak area, so you can target those questions directly; and during topic-by-topic revision in the run-up to the May/June diet, to build confidence area by area before switching to full papers. Using past questions this way is a form of spaced retrieval that helps the content stick more effectively than re-reading notes alone.
