Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in OCR GCSE Physics?

Accepted Answer

Six-mark questions in OCR GCSE Physics use levels-of-response marking, which means the examiner is judging the overall quality and coherence of your answer rather than simply counting individual points. To reach the top level, you need to link ideas together clearly, showing how one scientific concept connects to another rather than writing an unconnected list.

We'd suggest reading the command word carefully before you start, since OCR uses specific command words to signal whether you need to describe, explain, or evaluate. Using correct scientific terminology throughout your answer also helps push you into a higher mark band.

Our exam practice includes full mark schemes so you can see exactly what a top-band response looks like, and working through these using active recall is a particularly effective way to build confidence with this question type.

Question 2

What do the levels in the OCR GCSE Physics mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Some longer questions in OCR GCSE Physics use levels-of-response marking, where the examiner reads your whole answer and judges its overall quality rather than awarding a mark for each individual point you make. A higher level typically reflects a well-structured response that uses accurate physics terminology and links ideas together clearly, while a lower level shows some relevant knowledge but weaker scientific reasoning or incomplete explanations. Our exam practice includes model answers that show you exactly what a stronger response looks like compared to a weaker one, so you can develop a feel for the standard the examiner is expecting.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is organised by topic, so you can target the areas of the Physics spec where you want more practice, rather than working through a full mixed paper before you feel ready.

Pre-testing on individual topics (answering questions before you've fully revised them) is a great way to spot gaps early, which is where our by-topic view really helps. Past papers are most useful once you've covered the content and want to experience the full exam format and build your timing. We'd suggest using our exam practice topic by topic to build confidence first, then using past papers closer to your exams to pull everything together.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Each of your two Physics papers gives you 70 minutes for 60 marks, which works out to just over a minute per mark. A helpful rule of thumb is to spend roughly one minute for every mark the question is worth: a 2-mark question gets around two minutes, and a 6-mark extended-response question gets around six or seven minutes.

Keeping an eye on the mark allocation printed next to each question helps you avoid spending too long on any one part. Our exam practice includes past-style questions so you can build a feel for this pacing well before exam day.
