Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics?

Accepted Answer

The 6-mark questions in your Pearson Edexcel Physics papers are extended open-response questions, and they're marked using levels-of-response criteria rather than a simple tick-list of points. That means the examiner is looking for a well-organised, logically connected answer, not just a scattered collection of correct facts. We'd suggest reading the question carefully to spot what it's asking you to do (recall knowledge, apply it to a context, or analyse and evaluate), then planning your answer briefly so your explanation builds coherently from start to finish. Our exam practice shows you what a top-level response looks like for this exact specification, which is one of the most effective ways to calibrate your own writing before the real exam.

Question 2

What do the levels in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels-based marking can feel mysterious at first, but the principle is straightforward: it applies to the extended open-response questions you'll find in both Physics papers, and it rewards the overall quality of your scientific reasoning rather than awarding a separate point for every individual fact you include. The examiner reads your whole answer and decides which level best fits it, based on how well you've linked scientific ideas together, how clearly you've explained the physics, and how logically your response flows. Our exam practice includes worked examples comparing higher-level and lower-level answers, which is one of the most useful ways to see precisely what earns the marks.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Cognito's exam practice is built topic by topic, so you can target the specific areas of the 1SC0 Physics spec where you feel less confident, rather than having to work through a whole paper at once. Our questions are written to mirror the style and demand of the real Edexcel papers, and unlike past papers they're not a finite resource, so you can keep returning to any topic you want to strengthen.

Past papers are excellent for building exam technique under realistic full-paper conditions, and we'd suggest using them once you've built confidence topic by topic through our exam practice first. That sequence, topic-level practice then a full-paper run, also maps naturally onto spaced retrieval, which research shows is one of the most effective ways to make knowledge stick before exam day.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Each Physics paper gives you 70 minutes to work through 60 marks of questions, which works out to just over one minute per mark. A reliable approach is to spend roughly one minute for each mark available on a question, so a 4-mark question gets around four minutes and a 6-mark extended response gets around six. That leaves a few minutes at the end to check calculations and review any answers you were unsure about. Our exam practice includes timed questions so you can build a feel for this pace before you sit the real paper.
