All tests must follow standardised procedures for meaningful comparisons.
Factors to consider when selecting a fitness test
- Relevance to the component - Ensure the test directly assesses the desired fitness element, like using a sprint for speed rather than endurance.
- Safety and accessibility - Choose tests that are safe for the participant's fitness level and require minimal specialised equipment.
- Reliability and validity - The test should produce consistent results when repeated and accurately measure what it claims to.
Tests for cardiovascular endurance
Cardiovascular endurance, also known as aerobic fitness, refers to the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen to muscles during prolonged physical activity.
Multi-stage fitness test (MSFT)
This test evaluates cardiovascular endurance through progressive shuttle runs.
Procedure:
- Participants run back and forth between two lines 20 metres apart, timed to audio bleeps.
- The time between bleeps decreases as levels increase, making the test harder.
- The test ends when the participant misses two consecutive bleeps.
- The score is recorded as the level reached and the number of shuttles completed.
Cooper 12-minute run/walk test
This test measures the distance covered in a fixed time to assess cardiovascular endurance.
Procedure:
- Participants run or walk as far as possible in 12 minutes on a flat surface or track.
- The total distance achieved is recorded; a greater distance shows superior cardiovascular endurance.
Tests for muscular strength and endurance
Muscular strength is the maximum force a muscle or group of muscles can generate in a single effort, while muscular endurance is the ability to repeat contractions against resistance over time.
Grip strength dynamometer test
This test measures muscular strength in the hand and forearm.
Procedure:
- A dynamometer (a handheld device that measures force) is squeezed as hard as possible for five seconds.
- The reading is recorded in kilograms.
- The best result from three attempts is used.
One repetition maximum (1RM)
This test determines the heaviest weight that can be lifted once for a specific muscle group, assessing maximum strength.
Procedure:
- Weights are increased progressively in small increments.
- The participant attempts a single lift at each weight until failure.
- The highest successful weight is the 1RM score.
Sit-up and press-up tests
These tests evaluate muscular endurance in core and upper body muscles.
Procedure:
- For sit-ups, participants perform as many repetitions as possible in one minute, measuring abdominal endurance.
- For press-ups, the maximum number in one minute assesses upper body endurance.
Tests for speed and agility
Speed is the ability to move quickly over a distance, while agility involves changing direction rapidly while maintaining control and speed.
30m sprint test
This test measures pure speed.
Procedure:
- Participants run at full speed over 30 metres (alternative distances can be used).
- Time is recorded using a stopwatch or timing gates.
- Shorter times indicate greater speed.
Illinois agility run test
This test assesses agility through a course with directional changes.
Procedure:
- Participants navigate a marked course with cones, involving sprints, weaves, and turns.
- Time taken to complete the course is recorded.
Tests for balance, reaction time, and power
Balance is the ability to maintain stability while stationary or moving. Reaction time is the speed at which someone responds to a stimulus. Power is the combination of strength and speed, measuring explosive force.
Stork stand test (balance)
- Participants stand on one leg, with the other foot touching the knee and hands on hips.
- They raise the heel to stand on toes, and timing starts.
- The test ends when the heel touches the ground or balance is lost.
- Time held is recorded in seconds.
Ruler drop test (reaction time)
- A ruler is held vertically above the participant's open hand and dropped without warning.
- The participant catches it as quickly as possible.
- The distance the ruler falls before being caught is measured.
- Shorter distances indicate faster reaction times.
Standing jump test (power)
- Participants jump horizontally from a standing position without a run-up.
- The distance jumped is measured, with landing on both feet required.
Vertical jump test (power)
- Participants measure their standing reach height, then jump vertically to touch the highest point possible.
- The difference between standing reach and jump reach is calculated.
Tests for flexibility and coordination
Flexibility is the range of motion around a joint. Coordination is the ability to use different body parts together smoothly and efficiently.
Sit and reach test (flexibility)
- Participants sit with legs extended and feet against a box, then reach forward along a measuring scale.
- The distance reached is recorded in centimetres.
Wall throw test (coordination)
- Participants throw a ball underarm against a wall, catching it with alternating hands for 30 seconds.
- The number of successful catches is counted.
