Question 1

What does Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics cover?

Accepted Answer

The Higher tier covers four main areas: Number, Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Algebra carries the largest weighting at 35–50% of the qualification, taking in everything from quadratic and simultaneous equations to function notation, graph transformations, and an introduction to differentiation. Number (10–20%) covers surds, fractional indices, standard form and set notation, while Geometry (25–30%) includes circle theorems, the sine and cosine rules, vectors, and trigonometry in three dimensions. Statistics and Probability (7–15%) rounds things out with histograms, cumulative frequency diagrams, and tree diagrams that include conditional probability. One feature that sets this qualification apart from the UK GCSE is that a scientific calculator is permitted in both papers, so you can rely on it throughout the exam. Our notes walk through each topic area in full, so you'll always have a clear picture of exactly what the spec expects from you.

Question 2

How does foundation tier differ from higher tier?

Accepted Answer

**Grades:** Foundation targets grades 5–1; Higher targets grades 9–4, with grade 3 allowed.

**Topics:** Higher assumes full knowledge of Foundation content and builds on it with additional topics, including vectors, calculus, function notation, algebraic proportion, surds, advanced circle theorems, the sine and cosine rules, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. Our notes cover each Higher-only area in detail.

**Content weighting:** Both tiers share the same assessment objective split (AO1 57–63%, AO2 22–28%, AO3 12–18%), but Higher carries more problem-solving (30% vs 25%) and more mathematical reasoning (20% vs 15%) than Foundation.

**Exam structure:**

| | Foundation | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Papers | 1F and 2F | 1H and 2H |
| Duration | 2 hours each | 2 hours each |
| Marks per paper | 100 | 100 |
| Calculator | Allowed on both papers | Allowed on both papers |
| Formulae sheet | Foundation Tier sheet | Higher Tier sheet |
| Target grades | 5–1 | 9–4 (grade 3 allowed) |

**Question types:** Foundation papers distribute marks roughly equally across grades 1–5. Higher papers allocate approximately 40% of marks to grades 4 and 5, with approximately 60% spread evenly across grades 6, 7, 8 and 9, so the majority of the paper sits at the harder end.

Question 3

Where should I start with GCSE Mathematics revision?

Accepted Answer

A solid starting point is Algebra, which the spec weights at 35–50% of the paper, making it the largest topic area on this course by some distance. Our notes cover every area of the Higher tier content, so we'd suggest working through the Algebra section first and using active recall as you go: read through a topic, close the notes, and write down everything you can remember before checking back.

Once you've built confidence there, Number (10–20%) and Geometry (25–30%) are the next most rewarding areas to work through, with Statistics and Probability (7–15%) rounding things out. Our by-topic view lets you see exactly which areas you've covered and jump straight to the sections where you need the most work.

Question 4

What's on Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics?

Accepted Answer

The Higher tier (4MA1/H) is made up of two written papers, and both allow a calculator (unlike the UK GCSE, where one paper is non-calculator).

| Paper | Topics covered | Length | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1H (4MA1/1H) | Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics | 2 hours | 50% |
| Paper 2H (4MA1/2H) | Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics | 2 hours | 50% |

Content is weighted heavily towards Algebra (35–50% of marks), followed by Geometry (25–30%), Number (10–20%), and Statistics & Probability (7–15%). Our notes cover all four topic areas systematically, so you can work through each section and build your understanding ahead of both papers.

Question 5

Can I use these notes as my Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics textbook?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Our notes are written to cover the full Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics (4MA1/H) Higher tier specification, so all the content Pearson can assess is included.

The Higher tier builds on Foundation content (which our notes also walk through), and then extends into Higher-only areas like calculus, function notation, and vectors, all of which are covered in full. We'd suggest pairing the notes with our exam practice questions as well, since working through problems alongside the content helps the maths stick far more effectively than reading alone.

Question 6

How do I get a grade 9 in Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Higher?

Accepted Answer

A grade 9 on Higher tier typically means demonstrating fluency across every topic on the spec, though the exact grade boundary shifts each year based on student performance, so we'd suggest checking the most recent figures on Edexcel's website rather than relying on a fixed number. In practice, hitting a grade 9 usually looks something like:

- **Prioritising algebra throughout our notes**, since AO1 (number and algebra) accounts for 57–63% of the total assessment, and algebra carries the largest individual topic weighting within that
- **Building problem-solving stamina**, because 30% of the Higher papers are assessed on problem-solving skills, and the hardest questions require multi-step reasoning applied to unfamiliar contexts
- **Going over Higher-only content until it feels automatic**, including differentiation, quadratic simultaneous equations, circle theorems, surds and vector proofs, all of which the spec explicitly places at Higher tier
- **Testing yourself with active recall** rather than re-reading, so you can identify gaps before they show up in the papers
- **Showing all your working clearly on every calculator question**, as both Higher papers (4MA1/1H and 4MA1/2H) permit a calculator throughout, which means examiners set complex multi-step calculations and reward fully-presented methods
