Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE IGCSE History past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might think is really worthwhile, and we'd suggest splitting it into two phases. Throughout the year, use our exam practice to work through topic-by-topic questions as you finish each unit, since spaced retrieval like this steadily builds the historical knowledge and analytical skills that both Paper 1 and Paper 2 reward.

Then, in the final weeks before your exams, we'd suggest completing two or three full papers from start to finish, so you grow comfortable with the full 1 hour 30 minutes of each paper and the spread of question types across both. Your school mocks are a great natural checkpoint for that kind of full-paper practice. Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to find the right questions at the right moment throughout the year.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

The quality of your paper practice matters more than the raw number you work through. Papers for this qualification have been available since June 2019, with two exam series each year (June and November), so there are real past papers to build up your practice with.

We'd suggest starting with older papers to get comfortable with the question formats and timing across both Paper 1 and Paper 2, then saving the most recent ones as a genuine check of your readiness closer to the exam. Our exam practice lets you work through questions by topic first, which is a great way to build confidence in specific areas before moving to full papers. Returning to questions you found tricky after a few days, a technique called spaced retrieval, is especially effective in a content-heavy subject like this one.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Past papers work best when you match the approach to where you are in your revision. We'd suggest starting without the clock so you can focus on understanding the question types and building well-structured responses, then moving to timed practice as your confidence grows. Each paper runs for 1 hour 30 minutes, so once you're ready to go timed, completing a full paper in that window helps you build a feel for pacing across the extended writing and essay-based questions. Our exam practice is a great place to get comfortable with those question styles before you tackle a full paper under pressure.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is useful diagnostic information, not a verdict on your ability. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to identify where the marks slipped, because this spec tests four distinct skills: knowledge and understanding (AO1), analysis and judgement (AO2), source comprehension and cross-referencing (AO3), and evaluating historical interpretations (AO4).

Once you've pinpointed which skill or topic let you down, our notes can help you rebuild the content gaps, and our flashcards support recall through spaced retrieval so the knowledge sticks before you try another paper. If it's essay structure rather than knowledge holding you back, our exam practice shows you what strong extended-writing and essay-based answers look like, so you have a clear model to work towards.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson Edexcel describes its 4HI1 mark schemes as straightforward and designed to make the assessment requirements clear, so self-marking is genuinely worthwhile. When working through your answers, we'd suggest checking each response against the four assessment objectives the mark scheme is built around: AO1 (knowledge and understanding of the period), AO2 (explanation, analysis and judgement using second-order historical concepts), AO3 (source comprehension and cross-referencing) and AO4 (evaluating historical interpretations). For the longer extended writing questions, applying a levels-of-response mindset helps you be honest with yourself about whether your answer is explaining and analysing or just describing events. Our exam practice resources include model responses that show what a strong answer looks like for each question type, which can help you calibrate where your own work sits.
