Question 1

When should I start doing OCR (Geography for Enquiring Minds) GCSE Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

The timing of past-paper practice matters a great deal for J384, and starting earlier than you might think is always worthwhile. Because this is the new OCR (Geography for Enquiring Minds) spec with first exams in 2027, there are currently no past papers written specifically for it, though specimen and practice materials will be available, and our exam practice section is built around those.

We'd suggest working through topic-by-topic questions as you finish each unit throughout the year, covering everything from Global Hazards and Changing Climate in Paper 1 to the human geography topics in Paper 2. This kind of spaced retrieval practice distributed across the year helps the content stick far better than leaving everything to the end.

As your school mocks approach, we'd suggest moving to full papers so you can get comfortable managing each component's 1 hour 30 minutes. We'd then suggest saving a small number of complete papers for the final few weeks before your real exams, keeping fresh material for when the pressure is highest. Our exam practice tool is a great place to begin topic-by-topic questions right from the start of the course.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Worth knowing upfront: the revised J384 spec has first exams in 2027, which means there are no past papers from the new specification available yet. Past papers from the earlier version of OCR Geography B may exist, but the content has been updated, so any older papers won't map perfectly onto what you're studying now.

Because of this, we'd suggest leaning on our exam practice questions, which are written for the current specification across all three papers (our Natural World, People and Society, and Geographical Exploration). Working through questions by topic first, then attempting full timed papers as your exams approach, is a great way to build confidence using spaced retrieval across the whole course. As official past papers become available from Cambridge OCR after the 2027 series, we'd recommend doing every one you can get hold of.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with the clock running is one of the most effective ways to prepare for OCR Geography B (J384), because all three papers are 1 hour 30 minutes each and pacing yourself across that time is a skill you genuinely need to practise.

One important thing to bear in mind: the revised J384 specification is first examined in summer 2027, so there may be very few past papers available for this exact version of the course just yet. We'd suggest using any specimen or legacy papers alongside our exam practice questions to build familiarity with question styles.

We'd suggest working through your content first, then moving into timed practice once you feel confident with the material. Spacing out that practice across all three papers (our Natural World, People and Society, and Geographical Exploration) through spaced retrieval helps the knowledge stick far more than a last-minute push.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a lower score than you hoped for on a past paper can be disheartening, but it's genuinely one of the most useful pieces of information you'll get during your revision. We'd suggest going through your paper topic by topic (Global Hazards, Changing Climate, and so on) to pinpoint exactly where marks slipped away, then revisiting those areas in our notes before attempting similar questions again.

The extended response questions (worth up to 12 marks on this spec) tend to have the biggest impact on your overall score, so these are worth giving particular attention. Our exam practice and mark scheme breakdowns can help you see what a strong answer looks like compared to your own.

We'd also suggest leaving a few days before tackling another paper, so your revision in between has time to make a difference. Spaced retrieval like this tends to show clearer progress than going back to a paper straight away.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR (Geography for Enquiring Minds) mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Because the new J384 spec has its first exams in 2027, past papers currently available are from the previous version of the specification, so bear that in mind when choosing papers to practise with. We'd suggest downloading the corresponding mark scheme from the OCR website alongside each paper and working through it question by question.

Short-answer questions award marks for each correct piece of information you include. Longer extended responses (worth up to 12 marks) use levels-of-response marking, where the mark scheme places your whole answer into a level based on its overall quality and development of argument rather than ticking off individual points. SPaG (3 marks per paper) is assessed within clearly flagged extended response questions, with marking guidance provided at the back of the mark scheme.

For extended responses, we'd suggest reading the level descriptors carefully and honestly considering which level your answer genuinely reaches before looking at the higher end of the mark band. Our exam practice on Cognito shows you what strong responses look like, which helps you gauge your own self-marking more accurately.
