Question 1

When should I start doing OCR (Geographical Themes) GCSE Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past papers earlier than you might expect gives you a real advantage with OCR Geography J383. We'd suggest working through individual past-paper questions topic by topic as you cover each theme throughout the year, so you build familiarity with how OCR asks about landscapes, ecosystems, climate change and geographical skills before the pressure is on.

Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to pull up relevant exam questions the moment you've finished a topic in class. Then, in the final few weeks before your May/June exams, full past papers really come into their own, and we'd suggest setting aside two or three complete papers at that stage, working through all three components together so you experience the real shape of the exam.

Your school mocks are a brilliant opportunity for this kind of full-paper practice too. Running topic questions throughout the year is a form of spaced retrieval, and the research consistently shows that regularly retrieving content over time helps knowledge stick far better than leaving everything to the end.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

How many papers to work through depends on your revision timetable and how confident you feel with the content, but more structured practice generally leads to better familiarity with OCR's question styles and timings. We'd suggest building your knowledge with Cognito's notes and flashcards first, then spacing out your past paper practice over several weeks as a form of spaced retrieval, rather than saving it all for the final few days. Because J383 has three separate papers (Living in the UK Today, The World Around Us, and Geographical Skills), it's worth making sure you get practice with each one so nothing feels unfamiliar on the day. Our by-topic exam practice is a great starting point if working through a full paper feels daunting at first.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Timing can feel daunting, but it's worth building up to it as your revision progresses rather than jumping straight in. We'd suggest starting by working through questions topic-by-topic to strengthen your knowledge across all three components, using spaced retrieval to help the content stick. As you get closer to the exams, practising with the real time limits becomes genuinely valuable: Paper 1 and Paper 2 each run for 1 hour with 60 marks to cover, and Paper 3 runs for 1 hour 30 minutes with 80 marks, so developing a feel for pacing across each paper really matters. Our exam practice lets you filter by topic and paper so you can build up gradually, then move to full papers with the clock running when you're feeling confident.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper can feel discouraging, but it is genuinely one of the most useful pieces of information you can have before the real exam. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to work out whether your gaps are in content knowledge (knowing locations, places and processes) or in applying that knowledge to interpret unfamiliar sources and data, since OCR J383 weights those application and skills questions heavily across all three papers. Once you know where the marks went, our notes and by-topic view can help you shore up content gaps, while our exam practice helps you work through the extended response questions (worth up to 12 marks each) where technique matters as much as knowledge. Spaced retrieval works really well at this stage: returning to the topics you dropped marks on across several short sessions, rather than covering them all at once, helps the content stick much more effectively.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR (Geographical Themes) mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking past papers is one of the best revision habits you can build, and OCR publish their mark schemes alongside past papers on their website so you can check your answers right away. For the shorter, point-based questions across all three papers, marking is fairly straightforward: the mark scheme lists the specific points that gain credit, so tick off each one you hit.

The trickier part is the extended response questions, which are marked using a levels-of-response approach rather than a simple point count. Read the level descriptors in the mark scheme carefully, honestly decide which level your answer sits in, and note where you could develop your reasoning into a more sustained argument. Our exam practice questions show you the range of question types you can expect across J383, so you can give extra attention to the question styles you find hardest when reviewing your mark scheme.
