Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice as early in the course as possible is a genuinely effective habit, even before you've worked through all the content. We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice to tackle Geography questions on each topic as you finish it in class, which is a form of spaced retrieval that helps the knowledge stick far better than leaving everything to the final month.

As your mock exams approach, that's the natural moment to work through a complete paper and get comfortable with the rhythm across Pearson Edexcel's three components. Then in the final few weeks before May/June, we'd suggest setting aside time for 2–3 full papers to build stamina across Paper 1 (Physical Environment), Paper 2 (Human Environment) and Paper 3 (Geographical Investigations).

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no single right number, but working through as many past papers as you can find is one of the most effective revision strategies as your exams approach. Edexcel 1GA0 has three papers to cover (The Physical Environment, The Human Environment, and Geographical Investigations: Fieldwork and UK Challenges), so we'd suggest spreading your practice across all three rather than focusing heavily on just one or two.

Our exam practice on Cognito is a great starting point for getting familiar with question styles, and our by-topic view lets you target the areas where you feel least confident. We'd suggest revising a topic using our notes and flashcards first, then working through past questions on it using active recall, so each paper attempt is as productive as possible.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising past papers with the clock running is genuinely valuable for Edexcel GCSE Geography (1GA0), because the three papers each have different time allocations: Paper 1 runs for 1 hour 45 minutes, while Papers 2 and 3 are each 1 hour 30 minutes, so building a feel for that pace really helps.

We'd suggest working through our notes and our exam practice by topic first, then moving to full papers once the content feels solid. That way you're building confidence in the material before you add the pressure of the clock. Pre-testing (trying questions before you feel completely prepared) can prime your brain to retain the answers, so don't hold off too long. Our by-topic view makes it easy to spot which areas deserve more attention after each practice session.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is worth treating as a diagnostic tool rather than a verdict on your ability. We'd suggest going through each question you lost marks on and tracing it back to a gap in content knowledge, a skills issue (like misreading a command word), or a timing problem.

Our notes and flashcards can help you revisit the specific topics where your answers fell short, and our exam practice questions let you work through those areas again before returning to a full paper. For 1GA0, it's worth paying particular attention to the extended writing questions, since the 8-mark questions (and the 12-mark questions in Paper 3) reward well-evidenced geographical arguments that draw on your case studies and located examples. If fieldwork and enquiry process questions caught you out, our by-topic view makes it straightforward to focus on those sections specifically before attempting another paper.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The mark scheme for each paper is available to download from the Pearson Edexcel website alongside the past paper itself. For shorter questions (multiple-choice, short open, open response and calculations), marking is straightforward: compare your answer against the accepted responses and award the points. For the extended writing questions (worth 8 marks in Papers 1 and 2, and 8 or 12 marks in Paper 3), use the levels descriptors in the mark scheme to place your response honestly in the band that best fits your answer as a whole, rather than crediting every isolated point you made. It also helps to check the SPaG marks, which contribute 4 marks to each paper's total and are easy to overlook. Our exam practice and worked examples show you what a strong extended response looks like, which makes self-marking those higher-tariff questions much more accurate.
