1.16 - How Deposition forms River Landforms
The process of deposition in rivers and its role in landform creation
Deposition occurs when a river loses energy and drops the material it has been carrying. This process is key to the formation of various landforms along a river's path, shaping the landscape over time.
There are two main types of depositional landforms in rivers:
- Flood plains
- Levees
Both flood plains and levees are predominantly found in the lower course of a river.
Characteristics and formation of flood plains
Flood plains are broad, flat areas of land on either side of a river that are prone to flooding.
How flood plains are formed
- Flooding events - During floods, water spills over the river banks onto the surrounding land, slowing down as it spreads out.
- Sediment deposition - The slowed water drops the eroded material it carries, layering sediment across the flood plain.
- Elevation increase - Over time, these repeated deposits build up the height of the flood plain, making it a higher surface.
- Meander migration - As meanders (bends in the river) shift sideways across the flood plain, they widen it.
- Downstream movement - Meanders also move downstream, smoothing and flattening the valley floor over long periods.
- Point bar contribution - Deposition on the inner bends of meanders, known as point bars, adds further material to the flood plain, enhancing its development.
Characteristics and formation of levees
Levees are naturally raised embankments found along the edges of a river channel.
How levees are formed
- Flood overflow - When a river floods, water carrying sediment spills over onto the flood plain.
- Heavy sediment deposition - The heaviest particles are dropped first near the river channel as the water loses energy quickly upon leaving the main flow.
- Gradual build-up - Over multiple flood events, this deposited material accumulates, forming raised ridges along the river's edges.
- Natural barrier creation - These ridges, or levees, grow over time.
