Contour lines and river flow direction
Contour lines are essential features on topographic maps that indicate the height of the land above sea level, marked with numbers in metres. These lines provide critical information about the landscape, including the direction in which rivers flow.
How contour lines indicate river flow
- Height indicators - Each contour line represents a specific elevation, with numbers showing the height of the land.
- Flow direction - Rivers always flow from areas of higher elevation to lower elevation, meaning they move from higher-numbered contour lines to lower-numbered ones.
- Directional clue - On many maps, height values decrease towards the west (left side), indicating that downhill, and thus river flow, is generally in that direction.
Identifying steepness and river characteristics
The spacing and arrangement of contour lines on a map reveal the steepness of the terrain and specific features of a river's path.
Features shown by contour line spacing and patterns
- Steepness of slopes - When contour lines are close together, the land is steep; when they are far apart, the slope is gentle.
- V-shaped valleys - Where contour lines cross a river, they often form a V-shape. The point of the V indicates the uphill direction, showing where the river originates.
Recognising upper course landforms on maps
The upper course of a river is characterised by steep gradients and distinct landforms. Maps provide specific evidence to identify these features.
Key map evidence for upper course landforms
- High elevation - Nearby land is at significant heights, often exceeding 700 m.
- Numerous contour crossings - The river crosses many contour lines over a short distance, showing a steep descent.
- Narrow river channel - Represented by a thin blue line on the map.
- Close contour lines - These suggest a narrow valley floor with steep sides, typical of a V-shaped valley.
- Waterfall indicators - Waterfalls may be directly marked on maps, or inferred from symbols like black, blocky lines representing cliffs, alongside tightly packed contour lines.
Recognising lower course landforms on maps
In the lower course, rivers flow through flatter landscapes. Maps show distinct characteristics that help identify this stage of a river's journey.
Key map evidence for lower course landforms
- Low elevation - The surrounding land is typically below 15 m.
- Minimal contour crossings - The river crosses few or no contour lines, reflecting a very gradual slope.
- Wide river channel - Shown as a thick blue line on the map.
- Flood plain presence - The river meanders across a broad, flat area with no contour lines, identifying the flood plain.
- Meanders and ox-bow lakes - Large, looping bends called meanders are visible, and sometimes ox-bow lakes are formed near these meanders..
