When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) IGCSE Geography past papers?

Starting topic-by-topic past-paper questions as soon as you finish studying each section is the approach we'd suggest for CIE IGCSE Geography (0460). Our by-topic view makes it easy to pull up questions on Changing river environments or Tectonic hazards straight after covering them, so you can test your understanding while the content is still fresh. This kind of spaced retrieval throughout the year builds your confidence across all ten topics well before the exams arrive. In the final few weeks, we'd suggest saving two or three full papers to work through in one sitting, which gets you used to managing the 1 hour 45 minutes for Paper 1 and Paper 2 separately. If your school runs mock exams, treat those as your main full-paper rehearsal and use any remaining past papers for targeted follow-up on weaker areas. Our exam practice section has topic-level questions and full papers ready whenever you need them.

How many past papers should I do?

There's no magic number of past papers that works for everyone, but the timing and quality of your practice matter a great deal. We'd suggest building your topic knowledge first using our notes and flashcards, then moving into our exam practice to test yourself question by question before attempting full papers as your exam approaches. CIE IGCSE Geography (0460) has Papers 1 and 2 (plus Paper 4 if your centre takes that option instead of coursework), so there's a solid bank of past material to work through over the course. Spacing your paper practice out across several weeks, rather than doing them all in one go, helps the content stick far more effectively than a last-minute rush.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Practising with the real time limits is genuinely worthwhile for CIE IGCSE Geography (0460), because pacing yourself across the written papers is a skill that develops with practice. Paper 1 and Paper 2 each run for 1 hour 45 minutes, and Paper 4 runs for 1 hour 30 minutes, so getting a feel for the pace of each paper before exam day really pays off. We'd suggest building up gradually rather than jumping straight into full timed attempts. Working through individual questions or sections first, using our notes and exam practice to check your understanding, helps you see what strong answers look like before you add time pressure. That step-by-step approach tends to build confidence much more effectively than going full-timed from day one.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful feedback, not a reason to worry. We'd suggest going through the paper question by question to identify whether you lost marks on knowledge and understanding (AO1), skills and analysis (AO2), or evaluation and decision-making (AO3). Since AO2 carries the largest weighting in the qualification at 48%, it's worth paying particular attention to any map work, graph interpretation, or data-response questions where marks slipped. Once you know which areas need attention, our notes can help you revisit the content, our flashcards support the terminology, and our exam practice lets you work through similar questions again. Spaced retrieval across several shorter sessions tends to help the content stick far better than revisiting everything in one go.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Self-marking past papers is a great habit for this qualification, and spending a moment understanding how CIE mark schemes are structured will make the feedback you give yourself much more valuable. The written papers all include both short-answer items and extended response items, and the mark scheme covers both. For extended responses, CIE uses a levels-based approach: read each level descriptor, identify the best fit for your answer, then award the top mark if your response convincingly meets the level, a middle mark if it adequately meets it, or the lowest mark if it just meets it. Our exam practice walks you through what strong answers look like at different levels, so we'd suggest using those examples alongside the mark scheme to help calibrate your judgement.
