Industrial agriculture refers to the large-scale, intensive production of food that has expanded significantly since the 1940s.
Characteristics and consequences of industrial agriculture
- Scale and intensity - Focuses on intensive, large-scale food production that became more widespread since the 1940s
- Water usage - Consumes approximately 70% of the global freshwater supply
- Chemical dependency - Relies on chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers
- Soil degradation - Can make soil less productive by permanently removing nutrients
Low-impact farming methods for sustainability
To counter the negative effects of industrial agriculture, various low-impact farming methods have been developed.

- Decreased reliance - Makes urban areas less dependent on industrial agriculture
