Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE IGCSE French past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past papers early in the year makes a real difference, and we'd suggest a two-phase approach. For most of the course, we'd recommend working through topic-by-topic past-paper questions as you finish each of the five topic areas (Home and abroad, Education and employment, Personal life and relationships, The world around us, and Social activities, fitness and health) rather than saving everything until revision time.

This gives you targeted practice across all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) as you build them, and helps the content stick much more effectively than leaving papers to the end. Then, in the final few weeks before your exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three full papers to use as proper mock run-throughs, so you get used to the timing pressure across each paper.

Our exam practice is organised by topic, which makes it easy to pick up questions on exactly the area you've just covered.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective things you can do in the final stretch of your revision, but quality of practice matters more than quantity. We'd suggest using Cognito's exam practice first to get comfortable with the question types across all three papers (Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking), then moving on to full past papers once you feel confident with the content.

Since first exams were in 2019 and Pearson runs the June assessment series each year, there are several years' worth of papers available, so there is plenty of material to work through. We'd suggest reviewing each paper carefully afterwards and using active recall to revisit the vocabulary and grammar points where you lost marks, rather than simply completing papers and moving on.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with real time pressure helps you build the pacing you'll need on the day, and pre-testing with past papers is one of the most effective ways to expose gaps in your French before they matter.

Paper 1 (Listening) runs for 30 minutes with 5 minutes' reading time beforehand, while Paper 2 (Reading and Writing) is 1 hour 45 minutes, so it's worth getting a genuine feel for those time frames. Our exam practice tools let you work through questions at a manageable pace first, then move towards full timed attempts as your confidence grows.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information: it shows you exactly where to focus next. We'd suggest going through each section carefully to identify whether the gaps are mainly in Listening, Reading, or Writing, since these skills are assessed in separate papers within 4FR1 and each carries its own weighting toward your final grade.

For the writing tasks in particular, the mark scheme rewards two separate strands: communication and content, and linguistic knowledge and accuracy. Reading your answers back against both dimensions helps you understand precisely where marks were lost, whether that's in how clearly you expressed ideas or in the accuracy of your grammar and verb forms. Our notes walk through the vocabulary and grammar structures by topic, and our exam practice lets you work through similar tasks to build confidence before you attempt another full paper.

Spaced retrieval tends to help here too: returning to the same weak topic or skill across several short sessions, rather than one long review, helps the content stick much more effectively.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own past paper works differently depending on which paper you're checking. For Paper 1 (Listening) and the reading section of Paper 2, compare your answers directly against the mark scheme Pearson publishes alongside each past paper, as most responses in those sections are clearly right or wrong.

The writing tasks in Paper 2 use a levels-based mark scheme assessed on two criteria: Communication and content, and Linguistic knowledge and accuracy. Read the descriptors for each mark band carefully and decide honestly which one best fits your response for each criterion.

Writing mark schemes can feel subjective when you're assessing your own work, so we'd suggest using our exam practice resources alongside the mark scheme to develop a feel for what each level looks like in practice.
