Throughout your course, use our by-topic exam practice to work through Listening, Reading, and Writing questions skill by skill as you build your vocabulary and grammar. This spaced retrieval approach helps the content stick far more effectively than saving everything until the end.

In the final few weeks before your exams, we'd suggest working through any available full papers and Pearson's sample assessment materials to get a feel for the real timing and layout across all four papers. Saving two or three of these for the very end gives you the closest possible simulation of the genuine exam experience. Your school mock is a great dress rehearsal for exactly this stage.

Yes! Working through past papers under timed conditions is great preparation for 1FR0H, because it trains you to manage your pace across each paper. For the higher tier written papers, the timings to replicate are 60 minutes for Paper 2 Listening (including 5 minutes' reading time), 60 minutes for Paper 3 Reading, and 1 hour 20 minutes for Paper 4 Writing. We'd suggest building familiarity with question types first using our exam practice, then moving to full timed attempts as your exams get closer. That progression from open practice to timed conditions is where real confidence builds, and it also shows you which topics still need attention before exam day.

A low score on a past paper is genuinely useful information; it tells you exactly where to focus your time before the real thing. We'd suggest going through your answers to identify whether the gaps are in vocabulary, grammar, or a particular skill, since all four components (Listening, Reading, Writing, and the Speaking NEA) are each worth 25% of your final grade.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Marking your own Edexcel GCSE French past papers is really valuable practice, and Pearson publishes mark schemes as part of their Sample Assessment Materials (SAMs) document. For Papers 2 and 3 (Listening and Reading), self-marking is fairly straightforward because questions are answered in English, using multiple-choice, multiple-response and short open-response formats, so the mark scheme will list the accepted answers clearly.

Paper 4 (Writing) is trickier: the open-response questions are marked against two sets of criteria (Communication and content, and Linguistic knowledge and accuracy), so we'd suggest reading each descriptor carefully and being honest about which level your response reaches. The translation tasks in Paper 3 and Paper 4 are also more judgement-based, so comparing your response closely to any model answers in the SAMs will help.
