Question 1

When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) IGCSE French past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting topic-by-topic past-paper questions early in the course is a really effective strategy for CIE IGCSE French (0520), so we'd suggest weaving them into your revision from the beginning rather than saving everything for the final sprint.

Our by-topic view makes it easy to find past questions on specific themes (such as everyday activities, personal life or the world of work) as you cover each area, which helps the vocabulary and structures stick through active recall as you go.

As your mock exams approach, shifting to full past papers across all four components (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) is a great way to experience the rhythm of moving between different skill demands, and mocks are the ideal moment to identify which papers need the most attention.

In the final few weeks before the real exams, we'd suggest keeping two or three complete past papers in reserve so you can check your timing and confidence right before results day.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no universal rule here, and how many papers you do matters less than how you use them. For CIE IGCSE French (0520), we'd suggest working through our notes and flashcards to build your vocabulary and grammar first, then turning to past papers to check how your skills hold up across the four assessed areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking preparation. We'd suggest treating each paper as a diagnostic: use our by-topic view to identify where marks slipped, then revisit those areas before your next one. Gradually increasing how often you do papers as exams get closer, rather than saving them all for the final few weeks, tends to work well for most students.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with the clock running is one of the most effective ways to prepare for CIE IGCSE French 0520, because each paper has a set duration you need to feel comfortable with: the Listening paper lasts approximately 50 minutes, Reading 1 hour, Writing 1 hour, and the Speaking component approximately 10 minutes (plus 10 minutes of preparation time). Getting used to those time pressures before the real thing helps you pace each section and avoid rushing at the end.

We'd suggest starting with untimed practice to get comfortable with the question types first, then gradually introducing timing as your exam date approaches. Our exam practice lets you work through questions by paper and skill, so you can spot which sections are taking too long and focus your efforts there.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper can feel disheartening, but it is genuinely useful information: it shows you exactly where to focus next rather than revising everything at once.

We'd suggest starting by identifying which of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, or Writing) let you down most, then going back through our notes for those specific topic areas to reinforce the vocabulary and grammar structures the paper tested.

Once you feel more confident on the content, our flashcards are great for active recall of the vocabulary list, and our exam practice questions let you apply that knowledge under realistic conditions before you attempt another full paper.

If your Writing mark was low, it's worth reading the mark scheme carefully to see whether the issue was communication, range of language, or accuracy, since CIE markers assess those qualities separately.

Progress on language papers tends to be gradual, so we'd suggest spacing out your past paper attempts and using the time in between to work through the weaker areas systematically.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

For Papers 1 (Listening) and 2 (Reading), which use multiple-choice and matching questions, you check your answers against the answer key in the mark scheme; Paper 2 also includes short-answer questions in French, where the mark scheme lists accepted answers you can compare your own against. Where questions use a levels-based mark scheme, read your response and decide which level descriptor is the closest fit, then award the highest mark in that level if your work convincingly meets the descriptor, a middle mark if it adequately meets it, or the lowest mark if it just meets it. Paper 3 (Speaking) is conducted and marked by your teacher, then externally moderated by Cambridge International, so it isn't typically something you'd self-mark from a past paper in the usual way. Our exam practice on Cognito can help you understand what strong responses look like, which makes your own marking much more accurate when you come to judge your written work.
