Question 1

When should I start doing OCR GCSE English Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early in the year is genuinely one of the best things you can do for OCR GCSE English Literature, because the extended-response questions OCR uses across both components take real practice to feel confident with. We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice throughout the course, working through questions on each text or poetry cluster as you finish studying it, so you build up your skills in the style that OCR rewards in Component 01 and Component 02. Then, in the final few weeks before the May/June exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three full papers so you can experience the 2-hour closed-text conditions of each component and build the stamina those longer responses require.

Your school mocks are a natural midpoint in this process: treat them as a dress rehearsal, then use the feedback to focus your revision before the final push with complete papers.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but working through the available past papers is one of the most effective things you can do in the run-up to your exams. Because OCR GCSE English Literature (J352) has been running since 2017, there are several years of papers for both Component 01 and Component 02, giving you plenty of material to work with.

We'd suggest treating past papers as a way to build your confidence with exam conditions rather than just ticking a box. Working through them once isn't really the point; what matters is reviewing your answers carefully against the mark scheme, noticing which question types feel trickier, and using that to guide what you revisit in your notes and flashcards. Our exam practice on Cognito is a great complement to full papers, letting you focus on specific question types before you work through a complete paper.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with a clock running is genuinely one of the most useful things you can do in your revision, and we'd suggest building it into your plan for the later stages of preparation. Both OCR English Literature papers are 2-hour closed-text exams, so you'll be writing extended responses from memory under real time pressure, and building that stamina takes deliberate practice. We'd suggest starting with individual questions on your set texts using our exam practice section, then moving to full papers once you feel confident with the content, so the experience feels purposeful rather than overwhelming.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely disheartening, but it's one of the most useful pieces of information you can get at this stage of your revision. We'd suggest starting by identifying which of OCR's four assessment objectives let you down: AO1 (personal response with textual evidence), AO2 (analysing language, form and structure), AO3 (understanding context), or AO4 (written accuracy).

Our notes and exam practice are built around these objectives, so once you know where the gap is, you can focus your energy in exactly the right place. The OCR grade descriptors are worth checking too: a grade 5 response develops a clear understanding of how writers use language, form and structure and uses apt textual references, while a grade 8 response sustains a perceptive critical analysis and makes illuminating comparisons between texts. If your answer felt more descriptive than analytical, working on embedding quotations and commenting on their effect is a strong next step. Spaced retrieval with our flashcards can help quotations stick, and our exam practice gives you structured opportunities to apply them in extended response answers.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking English Literature past papers takes practice, but it is one of the most useful things you can do to understand what OCR is rewarding. The questions in J352 are all extended writing tasks, so the mark scheme uses a levels-of-response approach: rather than ticking off individual points, you read each band descriptor and decide where the quality of your response honestly fits. The four assessment objectives shape every mark, so we'd suggest checking your answer against AO1 (personal response and use of textual evidence), AO2 (analysis of language, form and structure), AO3 (understanding of context), and AO4 (quality of written expression) before settling on a level.

A helpful move is to annotate your own answer first, noting where you've addressed each AO, then compare with the mark scheme descriptors. OCR also publishes grade descriptors for grades 8, 5 and 2 in the specification itself, which give a clear sense of what a response at each level looks and feels like. Our exam practice tool includes worked examples so you can see how strong answers are constructed, making the whole self-marking process more concrete.
