When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) IGCSE English Literature past papers?

Starting past-paper practice from early in the course is a great habit, and we'd suggest using questions in two different ways across the year. In the earlier months, our by-topic exam practice lets you work through questions on each set text individually, which builds confidence and helps the content stick before you focus on timing. As your mocks approach, shifting to full past papers gives you a feel for the real rhythm of Paper 1 (Poetry and Prose) and Paper 2 (Drama), both 1 hour 30 minutes long. We'd suggest keeping two or three complete papers in reserve for the final weeks before your May/June sitting, so you always have fresh material when it matters most.

How many past papers should I do?

Past papers are one of the most effective revision tools for CIE IGCSE English Literature (0475), but there's an important catch worth knowing: set texts rotate every 1–3 years, so older papers will often test completely different texts from the ones you're studying. We'd suggest working through every paper available for your specific exam cycle as a priority, then dipping into earlier series only if the set texts overlap with yours. Our exam practice on Cognito can supplement past papers with essay prompts tailored to your set texts, helping you build confidence across both Paper 1 (Poetry & Prose) and Paper 2 (Drama).

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Timed practice is genuinely valuable for building exam confidence, but we'd suggest getting comfortable with the texts and question types first so your timed attempts give you useful feedback rather than just feeling stressful. When you're ready to go timed, Papers 1 and 2 are each 1h 30m, so practising to that length helps you feel secure managing your time across questions. Our exam practice lets you work through questions at your own pace initially, then shift to timed mode once you've built a feel for the style of response each question needs.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is a signal, not a verdict, and going through the mark scheme closely to pinpoint where your response fell short is the best place to start. We'd suggest then revisiting the relevant texts using our notes, and using active recall to write out what you remember before checking back to identify the gaps. For CIE English Literature, strong marks come from building a personal, evidence-based argument rather than summarising plot, so our exam practice questions are a great place to work on that skill one response at a time. If the unseen paper felt rushed, the specimen materials recommend spending 30 minutes reading and planning before you write your answer. Once you feel more confident with the content, returning to a fresh paper will show you how far you have come.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Cambridge mark schemes for English Literature use band descriptors rather than right-or-wrong tick-marking, so the process is more interpretive than in a maths or science paper. After completing a response, find the band description that best matches your answer by looking for the qualities described: how well you have engaged with the text, how effectively you have used evidence, and how developed your argument is. Mark schemes are available to download directly from Cambridge International's website alongside the past papers. Our exam practice on Cognito walks through what markers are looking for at each level, which can help you calibrate where your answer sits, and we'd also suggest reading any examiner reports Cambridge publishes alongside the papers as these give useful insight into the patterns markers commonly notice.

How does Cognito group Cambridge International (CIE) past-paper questions by topic?

Our by-topic view groups past-paper questions from Paper 1 (Poetry & Prose) and Paper 2 (Drama), so you can pull up every question on a particular text or skill area rather than working through whole papers at once. Three moments when it really helps: just before an end-of-unit test, when you want to check you can handle question types on the texts you have just studied; when mock results flag a weak area, so you can focus on that specific text or question style without repeating work you already know well; and during topic-by-topic revision in the final run-up to the exam, when steady active recall across each component helps the knowledge stick.
