How do I know if I've understood a question type?

This is one of the trickier parts of revising English Language, because the subject works differently from content-heavy subjects. You can read the notes for, say, Paper 2 Question 4 (the 16-mark comparison) and still not really know how to write it under exam conditions.

Our quizzes are a quick way to find out where you actually are. They test the command words, the mark scheme levels, and the analytical vocabulary that underpins your written answers. If you can't answer a quiz on the levels, you're going to struggle to write to them when it actually counts.

When you get one wrong, the explanation shows you the precise wording the mark scheme uses. That precise language is exactly what examiners are looking for in your written answers, so getting comfortable with it on quizzes pays off when you're writing extended responses later.

Why do command words matter so much?

Command words matter because AQA mark schemes are built around them. The difference between identify, explain, analyse and evaluate is genuinely the difference between a 4-mark question and a 20-mark question, and treating the wrong command word as the right one is one of the most common ways students lose marks they could have got.

If you treat a 'compare' question as an 'analyse' question, for example, you'll write a perfectly good analysis answer and still lose half the marks because you didn't actually compare anything.

A good way to get comfortable with command words is to use our quizzes as a starting point. They give you the foundation knowledge of what each command word actually demands. From there, you need to put it into practice on past papers so you get used to spotting them quickly under exam pressure.

How often should I quiz myself when revising GCSE English Language?

Doing a little bit often tends to work better than one long session. A good rhythm is to try a section-level quiz right after you've worked through that section in the notes, then come back to it 2 or 3 days later to check it's actually stuck.

The gap between attempts is what helps the vocabulary stay in your head. Coming back to a list of analytical terms a few days after you first learned them is far more powerful than reading the list five times in a row, because the act of retrieving the terms from memory is what makes them stick longer term.

Will quizzes get me ready for the exam questions?

They get you ready for half of it. Quizzes test the wording and the vocabulary, which is what you build your written answers out of. They don't get you ready for writing extended responses under timed conditions, which is genuinely a different skill.

The pattern most students find useful is to use quizzes for vocabulary, command words and mark scheme levels, then move to past papers for the extended writing practice. The two work together rather than being alternatives.
