Question 1

When should I start doing OCR GCSE Economics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early in the year pays off far more than saving everything until the final weeks, so we'd suggest weaving individual topic questions into your revision as you work through each area of the spec. Our by-topic view makes this straightforward: once you've covered something like demand and supply or fiscal policy, test yourself with past questions on that topic while the content is still fresh.

As your school mocks approach, that's a natural point to start attempting larger sections of papers so you can see how the different question types (multiple choice, short answer, and the extended-response questions) feel together in sequence. In the final two or three weeks before your real exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three complete papers to work through under exam conditions, building the stamina needed for both 1 hour 30 minute sittings. Our exam practice is organised to support exactly this kind of progression, and returning to topics you've already covered through spaced retrieval is one of the most effective ways to make the knowledge stick before exam day.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the highest-value things you can do in the lead-up to your OCR GCSE Economics exams, and the honest answer to "how many" is: as many as your schedule realistically allows. The J205 spec has been running since first exams in 2019, so there are several years of papers to work through, each consisting of two 80-mark papers (Paper 1: Introduction to Economics; Paper 2: National and International Economics). We'd suggest tackling the most recent series first, since those best reflect the current question style, then working back through earlier papers as time allows. As you mark each paper, try active recall: cover your answers and attempt to reconstruct your reasoning from scratch, which helps the feedback stick far more than re-reading alone. Our exam practice on Cognito is a great complement once you've worked through the available past papers, giving you further exposure to the extended-response "evaluate" questions where the higher marks are earned.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Doing past papers against the clock is genuinely valuable for OCR J205, because both papers are 1 hour 30 minutes long and you need to build a feel for pacing across the multiple choice section, the case study questions, and the extended response all within that window. We'd suggest working through the content and using flashcards first so you're not just rehearsing gaps, then moving to timed practice once you feel reasonably confident on a topic. Our exam practice tool has OCR J205 questions organised by topic, so you can build up gradually before taking a full paper to time. Pre-testing (attempting questions before you feel fully ready) is a well-evidenced way to prime your memory and reveal exactly where your understanding still needs work.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information because it points you directly to where your revision should go next. We'd suggest going through the paper question by question and working out whether your gaps are in knowledge (AO1 questions with command words like "State" and "Explain"), application to a context (AO2), or the longer "Analyse" and "Evaluate" questions (AO3), since each type needs a different approach. Our notes and flashcards can help you close topic gaps, and our by-topic view makes it easy to find the exact areas to revisit. When you return to exam practice, try active recall before checking the mark scheme, since retrieving an answer from memory strengthens understanding far more than re-reading your notes.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The OCR mark scheme is your best guide, and a few things make it easier to use effectively. For Part A's 20 multiple choice questions, marking is straightforward since each answer is simply right or wrong. Part B involves more judgment because the extended response questions, marked with an asterisk in the mark scheme, use level-based marking; rather than ticking individual points, you're judging your answer against descriptors for each level of quality. OCR's command words are a useful guide here: "evaluate" questions reward you for weighing both sides of the argument and reaching a supported judgement, while "analyse" questions look for a logical chain of reasoning. Our exam practice includes model answers that help you calibrate what a strong response looks like, which makes self-marking much more reliable.
