Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Economics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice works best when you start using past-paper questions early, topic by topic, rather than saving everything until the final weeks. As you finish each section of microeconomics or macroeconomics, work through questions on that topic so you can spot any gaps while there's still time to address them.

In the run-up to your May/June exams, we'd suggest keeping two or three complete papers for the end, so you can work through each of the two Edexcel Economics papers in full (1h 30m each). Your school mock is a brilliant dress rehearsal for that stage, so treat it as seriously as the real thing. This pattern of spacing retrieval practice across the year is one of the most evidence-backed revision habits going, and our by-topic exam practice makes it easy to build in from day one.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for Edexcel GCSE Economics (1EC0), and quality of review matters as much as the number you attempt. We'd suggest completing as many past papers as you can find, but always spending time going over your answers afterwards using the mark scheme rather than just moving on. Because each exam series has two papers (Paper 1 covering micro, Paper 2 covering macro), it's worth tracking how you perform on each one separately so you can see where to focus your revision. Spreading your attempts out over several weeks, rather than doing them all at once, uses the principle of spaced retrieval, which helps the content stick far better than a last-minute session. Our exam practice tool is a great way to target specific question types in between full paper attempts.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Timing matters, but it depends on where you are in your revision. Early on, we'd suggest working through past paper questions without the clock running, so you can focus on understanding what each question type is asking and how to structure your answers well. As your exam approaches, practising within the full 1 hour 30 minutes per paper helps you build pacing instincts, because fitting 80 marks into 90 minutes means moving steadily between shorter and extended questions. Our exam practice lets you work question by question or by full paper, so you can shift between both approaches as your confidence grows.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is more useful than it might feel right now, because it points directly to where your revision needs to go next.

We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question and categorising each dropped mark: was it missing content, an unclear explanation, or a timing issue? That diagnosis shapes everything that follows.

Once you know which topics let you down, our notes and flashcards can help you revisit those areas using spaced retrieval, which builds retention far more effectively than re-reading. After working through the content, try a handful of targeted questions on those same topics before attempting another full paper, so you can check the knowledge has genuinely stuck.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The mark scheme for each paper is published on Pearson's website alongside the past paper, so download both before you start. We'd suggest going question by question rather than marking the whole paper in one sweep, as this keeps your feedback specific and easier to act on. For the longer extended-answer questions, Edexcel uses levels-of-response marking, which means your answer is placed in a band based on the quality of your reasoning rather than ticking off individual points, so read the level descriptors carefully and be honest about which band your response sits in. Once you've marked, note which topics cost you marks and use our by-topic view to go back over those areas before your next paper.
