When should I start doing OCR GCSE Computer Science past papers?

Topic-by-topic past-paper questions are worth using from early in your course, as soon as you've covered a section of the J277/01 or J277/02 content. Our exam practice lets you filter by topic, so you can test your understanding of CPU architecture or sorting algorithms right after studying them, and this kind of spaced retrieval builds retention far more effectively than leaving everything to the final weeks.

We'd suggest saving two or three full 1h 30m papers for the period after your school mocks, when the content across both papers is complete. That way you're using them to simulate real exam conditions, rather than burning through them too early when gaps in your knowledge would make them less useful.

More important than the raw count is what you do afterwards: going over mark schemes closely and identifying the specific topics where marks slipped is what will move your grade. Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Timing is genuinely important for this spec: both papers run for 1 hour 30 minutes across 80 marks each, and Paper 2 splits into Section A (50 marks) and Section B (30 marks), so you'll need a feel for how to pace yourself across those sections.

That said, we'd suggest getting comfortable with the content first before adding time pressure, so the clock doesn't distract you from identifying where your gaps are. Once you feel reasonably solid on a topic, using our exam practice under realistic time constraints helps you build the pacing instincts you'll need on the day.

Pre-testing (attempting questions before you feel fully ready) is also worth building into your routine, as it surfaces exactly which areas to revisit in our notes and makes your revision far more focused.

The starting point is downloading the official OCR mark scheme from OCR's website alongside your question paper, so you can follow their accepted answers precisely.

For short and medium answer questions, we'd suggest marking strictly against the accepted answers in the mark scheme. Paper 1 includes one 8-mark extended response question, so read the mark scheme's guidance for that question carefully and honestly assess where your answer fits.

For Paper 2 Section B programming questions, OCR's own specification notes that minor syntax errors are not penalised, so focus on whether your logic and programming structures are correct. The command words in each question (such as "Explain", "Describe", or "Identify") are also a useful guide to how much detail the mark scheme is expecting.
