Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early is one of the most effective things you can do for Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry, and you don't need to wait until you've finished the whole course to begin.

We'd suggest using topic-by-topic past-paper questions as you work through each area of the spec (Principles of chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry and Organic chemistry), which harnesses spaced retrieval by testing yourself on each topic while it's still fresh in your mind.

We'd then suggest reserving two or three complete papers for the final few weeks, so you can experience the full 2-hour Chemistry Paper 1 as a whole. Your school mock is a great dress rehearsal for that stage, and it's worth treating it seriously so you know exactly where to focus afterwards.

Our exam practice on Cognito is built around this approach, letting you move from topic-focused questions during the year to full-paper practice in the final run-up.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

The right number depends on where you are in your revision, but the guiding principle is to use past papers once you feel confident enough to learn from your mistakes rather than feel overwhelmed by them. We'd suggest working through our topic-by-topic exam practice first to build that confidence, then using past papers in the run-up to your exam to check your timing and spot any remaining gaps across the four content areas (Principles of chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry and Organic chemistry). For every paper you complete, carefully reviewing the questions where you dropped marks is a strong use of active recall, and it tends to make each paper far more valuable than simply counting up how many you've done.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers under timed conditions is one of the best ways to build exam confidence, because it trains you to pace yourself across the full 2 hours and 110 marks of Chemistry Paper 1 (4SD0/1C).

We'd suggest building up to it gradually: spend time with our notes and flashcards to get the content solid first, then move to timed papers once the topics feel familiar. The paper covers a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response questions, so managing your time across those different styles is a real skill in itself.

Our exam practice is a great place to work through questions by topic before you move on to full timed runs.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is useful diagnostic information, and it tells you exactly where to focus your revision next.

We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and noting whether it was a knowledge recall question, an application question, or a data analysis question, since the paper tests all three types across its mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculations and extended open-response questions.

Once you've spotted a pattern, our notes can help you revisit the relevant part of the Chemistry spec, whether that's Principles of chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry or Organic chemistry.

For calculations in particular, working through similar problems in our exam practice until the method feels secure tends to be more effective than simply re-reading your notes.

We'd also suggest leaving a few days before attempting the same paper again, so spaced retrieval can do its work and you're genuinely testing what has stuck rather than just recognising questions you've already seen.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The Pearson Edexcel mark scheme for this paper is designed to be clear and accessible, which makes self-marking a genuinely useful revision tool. For multiple-choice, short-answer and calculation questions, accepted answers are listed directly, so checking your work is straightforward. Extended open-response questions require a bit more judgment, so read the mark scheme guidance carefully and be honest about where your answer falls short rather than awarding yourself the benefit of the doubt.

Once you've marked up, note any topics where you dropped marks and use our by-topic view to go back over that content. We'd suggest spacing out your practice papers over several weeks rather than doing them all at once, since spaced retrieval is one of the most reliable ways to build lasting understanding.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view organises every past-paper question around the four Chemistry topics in the Pearson Edexcel specification (4SD0): **Principles of chemistry**, **Inorganic chemistry**, **Physical chemistry**, and **Organic chemistry**. Rather than working through whole papers from start to finish, you can pull up questions on exactly the area you're revising at that moment.

Three good moments to use our by-topic view:
- Just before an end-of-unit test, to reinforce the content while it's still fresh and see how the examiners phrase questions on that topic. - When mock results flag a weaker area, so you can target those specific questions rather than working through papers where most content isn't the problem. - During the final weeks of revision, for a topic-by-topic sweep that helps make sure every area of the spec gets enough practice before the exam.
