Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chemistry past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper questions by topic early in the course is one of the most effective approaches you can take, because it builds question technique at the same time as reinforcing your understanding of each topic. We'd suggest working through our exam practice as you finish each topic (remembering that Topic 1 falls on both Chemistry Paper 1 and Paper 2, so it's worth revisiting), with Topics 2 to 4 feeding into Paper 1 and Topics 6 to 8 into Paper 2.

Full past papers are best saved for the final weeks before May/June, once you've covered most of the content. We'd suggest aiming for 2–3 complete papers in that window, treating any mock exams your school sets the same way, then using our by-topic view to identify and address any remaining gaps before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but the more Chemistry papers you work through, the better prepared you'll feel for higher tier. Your Edexcel Combined Science Chemistry assessment has two papers, Chemistry 1 and Chemistry 2, each 1 hour 10 minutes and 60 marks, so we'd suggest working through both paper types separately to get familiar with how questions are distributed across each.

Once you've covered the content with our notes and flashcards, our exam practice questions let you target specific topics before moving on to full papers. Spaced retrieval works well here: revisiting papers you've already attempted after a week or two helps the content stick far better than doing each paper only once.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timed past papers are one of the best ways to prepare, and we'd suggest building up to them rather than starting cold. Getting comfortable with the content first using our notes and flashcards, then working through our exam practice by topic, sets you up to get much more from a timed run.

Each Edexcel Chemistry paper is 1 hour 10 minutes for 60 marks, so building a feel for that pace before exam day really helps. Papers include a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response questions, and switching between those styles under time pressure is a skill in itself. Research on pre-testing shows that attempting a full paper before you feel completely ready primes your memory more effectively than re-reading notes. Our by-topic view is useful for tracking which areas to revisit after each timed session.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low score on a past paper is genuinely useful information, because it shows you exactly where to focus your revision next. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to spot where marks were dropped, since Edexcel's Chemistry papers include a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response questions, and the gaps often cluster in one question style or topic area.

Once you've identified the weak spots, our notes and our by-topic view make it straightforward to revisit the specific content, whether that sits in Topics 1–4 (Chemistry Paper 1) or Topics 1, 6, 7 and 8 (Chemistry Paper 2). Building in spaced retrieval from there, coming back to those weak topics a few days later using our flashcards or our quizzes, helps the content stick far more reliably than re-reading once. Our exam practice then lets you check whether those gaps are closing before you return to another full paper.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own work carefully is one of the most effective ways to improve, and Pearson Edexcel's mark schemes are laid out to make this manageable. For multiple-choice, short-answer and calculation questions, we'd suggest matching each of your responses to the listed mark points, awarding yourself a mark for each one you hit.

Extended open-response questions use a levels-of-response approach, meaning the examiner judges the overall quality of your answer against level descriptors rather than ticking off individual bullet points, so be honest about which level your answer genuinely reaches. You can find official past-paper mark schemes through Pearson's examWizard tool, which tags questions to the 1SC0 specification. Our exam practice includes worked examples showing what a strong answer looks like across all question types, which helps you calibrate your self-marking more accurately.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view tags every past-paper question to Pearson Edexcel's own topic headings, so instead of working through whole papers you can filter to exactly the content you're revising right now. Each of the seven Chemistry topics in your Combined Science course has its own question bank, including Topic 1 (Key concepts in chemistry), which Edexcel tests on both of your Chemistry papers.

Three moments where our by-topic view is particularly useful:
- Just before an end-of-unit test, when you want exam questions focused only on that specific topic
- When mock results flag a weak area, so you can concentrate practice exactly where it's needed
- During topic-by-topic revision in the final run-up to the exam, to make sure every topic gets proper attention before paper day
