Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE IGCSE Business Studies past papers?

Accepted Answer

The two-paper structure of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business Studies (4BS1) spans five topic areas, and we'd suggest getting into past-paper questions much earlier than most students expect. Working through our by-topic exam practice as you cover each section is a form of pre-testing that helps you spot gaps in real time, so your mock feels far less daunting when it arrives.

In the weeks around your school mock, keep using our by-topic questions to go over any areas that feel shaky. Then, in the final few weeks before the real sitting, we'd suggest saving two or three full past-paper sessions (Paper 1 and Paper 2) so you get a genuine feel for the pace of 80 marks in 1 hour 30 minutes per paper.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the best ways to build confidence for 4BS1, and we'd suggest aiming to get through as many as you can access in the time before your exam. Since the qualification has two papers (Paper 1: Investigating small businesses and Paper 2: Investigating large businesses), make sure you're practising both rather than defaulting to whichever one feels more comfortable.

Our exam practice is a great starting point for getting familiar with the question styles before you move on to full papers. We'd also suggest reviewing mark schemes carefully after each attempt: returning to the questions you found tricky a few days later is a form of spaced retrieval, and it helps the content stick far more effectively than going over it just once.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with an eye on the clock is one of the most useful things you can do in the run-up to these exams, and we'd suggest weaving it into your revision plan once the content feels solid.

Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes and contains four compulsory questions worth 20 marks each, with a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, data-response and open-ended question types, so getting used to that rhythm genuinely pays off. We'd suggest using spaced retrieval with our notes and our flashcards to build up the content first, then moving on to timed past-paper attempts so you can practise managing your time across the different question types.

Our exam practice section lets you work through questions by topic if you want to target specific areas before attempting full papers.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is worth investigating carefully, not letting it knock your confidence. We'd suggest starting by going through the mark scheme and identifying which of the five content sections (Business Activity and Influences on Business, People in Business, Business Finance, Marketing, and Business Operations) cost you the most marks, then working through our notes for those areas before your next attempt.

It's also worth asking which assessment objective tripped you up. Pearson weights the papers heavily towards applying knowledge in context (AO2, at 38–39%) and selecting and interpreting business information (AO3, at 22–23%), so if your answers are too general or don't engage with the scenario, that's often where marks slip away.

Our exam practice works through all question types, from shorter "outline" and "explain" questions to the extended "analyse", "justify" and "evaluate" responses, so you can see exactly where your answers need more development. Spaced retrieval across several shorter sessions tends to build retention more effectively than one long sitting, so we'd suggest spacing your paper attempts out as you work back through the content.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson's mark schemes for 4BS1 are designed to be straightforward, which makes self-marking achievable with a bit of care. For shorter question types (multiple-choice, "give", "calculate"), you can check your responses directly against the accepted answers in the mark scheme. For extended questions using command words like "analyse", "justify", or "evaluate", you'll need to read the mark scheme's guidance carefully and judge honestly how well your answer matches the descriptors.

It helps to revisit the command word taxonomy in the specification before you mark, because each word signals a different expectation from you as a writer. Our exam practice can show you what strong answers look like in context, which makes it much easier to calibrate your self-assessment rather than just counting marks. Using past papers this way is also a form of pre-testing, which research suggests helps knowledge stick better than re-reading notes alone.
