How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in OCR GCSE Biology?

OCR's 6-mark questions are **Level of Response** questions. The examiner places your whole answer into one of three levels based on how well you've shown knowledge, application, and coherent reasoning. Here's how to maximise your marks.

**Understand the levels:**

Level 3 (5–6 marks) = detailed, accurate knowledge applied logically to the question, with a clear line of reasoning. Level 2 (3–4 marks) = some relevant knowledge, but gaps in detail or logic. Level 1 (1–2 marks) = limited knowledge or disjointed ideas.

**Answer the question directly:**

Read the question twice and underline the command word ("Explain…", "Evaluate…", "Discuss…").

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

OCR uses three levels to mark extended-answer questions (the 6-mark Level of Response questions you'll see in Section B of both papers). Here's what each level means:

**Level 3 (5–6 marks):** Your answer is detailed, well-organised, and uses scientific terminology accurately. You've linked multiple ideas together in a logical way, and everything you've written is relevant to the question. This is the level you're aiming for if you're targeting a grade 8 or 9.

**Level 2 (3–4 marks):** Your answer includes some relevant scientific ideas and terminology, but the explanation isn't as thorough or well-linked. You might have missed a step in the reasoning, or one part of the answer could be stronger.

**Past papers** are full-length exams you sit under timed conditions, usually near the end of your revision. They're brilliant for testing stamina and getting a feel for the real thing, but they're one-shot, once you've seen Paper 3 from June 2023, you can't "unsee" it.

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

A rough rule of thumb is **just over 1 minute per mark**, you've got 105 minutes for 90 marks on each paper, which works out at around 1 minute 10 seconds per mark.

That said, you'll want to spend less time on the multiple-choice questions in Section A (15 marks) so you can give yourself more breathing room for the longer Section B questions (75 marks). We'd suggest aiming to finish Section A in 10–12 minutes, leaving you around 90 minutes for Section B.

**For the 6-mark extended question:** This is the one that needs a bit more care. You're writing a longer, structured answer (often tying together practical skills and theory), so budget 8–10 minutes for it. The extra time gives you space to plan your answer, write in clear paragraphs, and check you've covered the required depth.
