Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Cambridge International IGCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

6-mark questions in Cambridge IGCSE Biology use **levels-of-response** marking, which means the examiner awards marks based on how well your whole answer holds together, not just how many facts you recall.

**What levels-of-response means:**

The examiner reads your entire answer and assigns it to a level (e.g. Level 1, 2, or 3). Each level has a descriptor, and higher levels need clearer explanations, more accurate detail, and better structure. A Level 3 answer gets the top marks (usually 5-6 marks), while Level 1 might only get 1-2.

**How to write a Level 3 answer:**

Start by reading the question twice to understand exactly what it's asking. Look for command words like "explain", "compare", or "evaluate", then plan your answer in your head.

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Biology mark schemes use **levels** to grade longer written answers, the kind where you need to explain a process, compare two things, or analyse data.

Instead of awarding one mark per point, the examiner reads your whole answer and decides which level it sits in. There are usually three levels (sometimes four), and each level has a mark range and a descriptor that tells the examiner what quality of answer belongs there.

**Level 1** answers show basic knowledge but might be vague, incomplete, or lack scientific detail. **Level 2** answers are clearer and more detailed, you've explained the science properly and linked ideas together. **Level 3** answers are thorough, logical, and use precise terminology throughout.

The examiner picks the level first, then fine-tunes the exact mark within that band based on how well your answer matches the descriptor.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is built to help you revise **by topic**, so you can target your weak areas and build confidence one piece at a time. Past papers test everything at once, which is brilliant for final prep but can feel overwhelming when you're still learning the content.

Here's how they compare:

**Our exam practice** lets you filter questions by topic (like B7 Human nutrition or B12 Respiration). You can practise just photosynthesis questions until you're confident, then move on. Each question comes with a full written solution, so you can see exactly where you went wrong and learn the method. Our questions are written in the Cambridge IGCSE style, covering the Core route content you'll see in Papers 1 and 3.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

The honest answer is: **it depends on the question**. The mark allocation tells you how much detail the examiner wants, so a 1-mark question needs a quick factual answer while a 6-mark question needs a longer, more developed response.

**A useful rule of thumb:** spend roughly 1 minute per mark. That gives you time to read, think, write, and check. So a 2-mark question gets about 2 minutes, a 4-mark question gets about 4 minutes, and so on.

In your **Paper 3** (the 2-hour theory paper), you'll have a mix of short-answer and longer structured questions, all covering Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The questions will have different mark values printed next to them.
