Question 1

When should I start doing AP Precalculus past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting topic-by-topic practice from early in the year sets you up well: as soon as you've covered a unit (Polynomial and Rational Functions, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, and so on), we'd suggest working through past questions on that material right away rather than waiting until everything is taught. Our exam practice lets you filter by topic, so you can target exactly what you've just learned without having to wade through a full paper cold. Then, in the final few weeks before your May exam, we'd suggest setting aside two or three complete sessions to work through the full paper format, covering all 42 multiple-choice questions and all 4 free-response questions back to back as a proper mock. Treating those mock sittings as a dress rehearsal builds the stamina and pacing you'll need for the real thing. Using spaced retrieval across the year and then ramping up to full mocks near the end gives your preparation genuine depth.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Because AP Precalculus only launched in Fall 2023 (with the first exam in May 2024), the pool of released past material is still limited, so we'd suggest working through all the Free-Response Questions available on AP Central rather than setting a fixed target for full papers. Our exam practice is a great way to fill the gaps, especially for building familiarity with the multiple-choice style that released FRQs don't cover on their own. Spacing your practice sessions out over several weeks rather than cramming them all at once tends to help the skills stick much more effectively.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practicing under timed conditions is a habit worth building as your exam approaches, because the AP Precalculus exam is divided into two sections with strict time limits: 105 minutes for 42 multiple-choice questions and 70 minutes for 4 free-response questions.

We'd suggest starting with untimed practice so you can focus on understanding the reasoning behind each problem fully, then gradually shifting to timed sessions as May gets closer. Our exam practice tab lets you work through released free-response questions in the format you'll see on the day, which is a great way to build that time-awareness. Combining timed practice with active recall, retrieving answers from memory before checking, is especially effective at building the kind of fluency the exam rewards.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a lower score than you hoped for is genuinely discouraging, but it's also one of the most useful pieces of information you can get before exam day. We'd suggest going through each question you missed and asking whether it was a content gap (you hadn't fully understood the topic) or a skills gap (you understood the idea but struggled to apply it across different representations).

For content gaps, our notes walk through all four units so you can go back to the specific area. For skills gaps, our exam practice helps you build fluency across both the multiple-choice and free-response sections of the AP exam. Once you've identified the weak spots, spacing out your review of those topics over several sessions, rather than cramming them all at once, helps the content stick far more effectively.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AP Precalculus mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

For AP Precalculus, College Board releases the free-response questions from previous exams on AP Central along with scoring guidelines that show exactly what earns credit on each part. Since Section 2 contains 4 free-response questions, this is where careful self-marking matters most: the guidelines reward demonstrated reasoning across all three mathematical practices (Procedural and Symbolic Fluency, Multiple Representations, and Communication and Reasoning), not just a correct final answer. Our exam practice on Cognito is built around those same practices, so working through our questions alongside released past papers can help you develop a clear sense of what a strong response looks like before you assess your own work.
