Question 1

When should I start doing AP Physics C: Mechanics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting topic-by-topic past-paper practice early in the year is a smart move for AP Physics C: Mechanics. As you finish each unit, for example Kinematics or Force and Translational Dynamics, we'd suggest working through released free-response questions on that topic right away rather than waiting until spring.

This kind of spaced retrieval, returning to exam-style questions regularly across the year, helps the calculus-based reasoning stick far more effectively than a last-minute cram. We'd suggest saving two or three full papers (covering both the multiple-choice and free-response sections) for the final few weeks before the May exam, so you get a realistic sense of pacing across the whole thing.

Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to target individual units as you go, and our exam practice is there whenever you're ready to step up to those full mock runs.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number of past papers that guarantees a 5, but working through as many released free-response questions as you can is one of the most effective ways to prepare for Section 2 of the exam. College Board releases FRQs publicly on AP Central, so those are your primary source of authentic practice material. Because the course was redesigned in 2025, we'd suggest prioritizing the most recent released questions, since older papers may not fully reflect the current format and question types. Our exam practice lets you work through questions by topic, which is especially useful if you want to focus your energy on units like Rotational Dynamics or Oscillations before broadening out to full mixed practice.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with time pressure is one of the most effective ways to prepare for AP Physics C: Mechanics, because the real exam asks you to manage 80 minutes across 40 multiple-choice questions and 100 minutes across 4 free-response questions. Practicing with those constraints develops the pacing instincts you'll need on exam day, and the active recall involved helps the physics stick far more effectively than re-reading your notes.

We'd suggest building up to it gradually: use our exam practice to work through questions by topic first, then move to full timed sessions once you feel confident with the content. College Board releases free-response questions on AP Central, which are great material to work through as your exam date gets closer.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low score on a past paper is genuinely useful information, not a reason to panic. We'd suggest going through each section separately: note which units (for example, Torque and Rotational Dynamics or Oscillations) cost you the most points, then work back through our notes for those topics before attempting another paper.

AP Physics C: Mechanics tests both multiple-choice and free-response skills, so it's worth identifying whether your weaker moments were in calculation-heavy questions or in the written justification and experimental-reasoning questions. Our exam practice questions are organized by topic, so you can focus your effort on the specific areas that need attention rather than repeating the whole paper from scratch. Spaced retrieval, revisiting the same weak topic across several short sessions over a few days, tends to help the underlying concepts stick far better than a single long review session.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AP Physics C: Mechanics mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking an AP Physics C: Mechanics paper is one of the most useful things you can do in your preparation. College Board publishes scoring guidelines alongside released Free-Response Questions on AP Central, where each of the 4 free-response questions comes with a detailed rubric showing exactly which steps earn points. For the multiple-choice section, a released answer key is provided alongside any officially released exam. One thing worth knowing: released exams appear on AP Central with roughly a one-year lag, so the most recent exam won't be available right away. When reviewing your free-response answers, we'd suggest reading the scoring guideline for each part before rereading your own response, since it's easy to assume you covered something you didn't write out explicitly. Our exam practice can also help you get used to the question types and the level of detail the scoring guidelines expect.
